Skyrim used to be inhabited by an ancient race from a continent that is now a frozen wasteland

The Elder Scrolls 5: SkyrimThe titular region is home to a richly layered history and lore, and much of it centers around the people who live there and their mythology, such as the race that would eventually become the Nords. Digging into a tradition like this is a long and difficult process Skyrim doesn't necessarily nudge the player towards knowledge of an ancient pre-Norse race The Elder Scrolls is not a given.

Whereas places like The Elder ScrollsThe Akavirs are well known, really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the franchise's deep lore. For example, the aforementioned pre-Norse race of hardy warriors from the far north, the Atmorans, are rarely mentioned in The Elder Scrolls and are the ancestors of the Nords, Imperials and Bretons rolled into one. Although the continent of Atmora cannot be visited in any The Elder Scrolls name, scraps of information about it are still available.

The Atmorans were a tribal, clan-based people whose culture emphasized honor, strength, and loyalty. They worshiped nine animal avatars corresponding to various contemporaries The Elder Scrolls deities. The Atmoran hawk is believed to be Kyne, the Mother of Men, while the Dragon is most likely SkyrimThe final boss, Alduin himself. The Atmorans arrived in Tamriel in a series of smaller invasions spanning hundreds of years, bringing with them the basis of modern Nord culture. Their first formally established city on the continent was Saarthal, founded by the famed warrior-hero Ysgramor as he led a fleet of settlers to flee the simmering civil unrest of Atmora.

Although Saarthal existed in relative prosperity for a time, it did not last long SkyrimThe native Snow Elves attacked and sacked the city in an event known as the Night of Tears. In response to the Falmer's brutal attack, Ysgramor returned to Atmora, gathered five hundred companions, and sailed back to Skyrim to fight the Falmer again. The Companions' counterattack was so brutal that the Falmer went underground, where they were eventually enslaved and mutated by the Dwemer. Meanwhile, the revived Altmer communities began expanding across Skyrim and Tamriel.

Although the history of the Atmoran is interesting in its own right, the continent they come from is also a great mystery. Civil war and other social problems aside, Atmora was a land of perpetual winter due to a strange phenomenon known as the Frost. Third Era expeditions confirm that the earth is still cold enough to produce SkyrimThe Nords winced and there is no word on what the frost could have been or what caused it.

The original Atmoran civilization is believed to have died out just like the modern one The Elder Scrolls era and the truth about what happened to Atmora remains one of the The Elder Scrolls“the most interesting mysteries.” Bethesda may decide to explore this theme further in a future release, though one might argue Skyrim especially for this was the best opportunity, given his environment.
