Once you are unlocked complete the prologue, One Small Stepwhich gives you access to the Frontier as your first ship and allows you to freely fly to other planets and locations.
In Cruise mode you can control your speed and direction normallyas well as use Boost Mode and fly to the destination manually.
If you you don't want to fly alone but you still want to take a more scenic route, you can use the Autopilot optionwhich activates when looking towards the target and by selecting R1 on PS, RB on Xbox or Spacebar on PC.
Autopilot prevents you from overshooting the target and also gives you the opportunity to do so walk around your shiptalk to your followers, or do some crafting during the trip.

Trading ships in Cruise mode is a great way to get a lot of different resources if you don't feel like farming them or don't have a base set up for a specific item.since most ships carry at least one or two items in decent quantities.
