Take-Two's CEO comments on the status of the Borderlands 4 Switch 2 port

Take-Two's CEO has commented on the status of the previously announced Nintendo Switch 2 port Borderlands 4. It came out last September, Borderlands 4 was the first major entry in Gearbox Software's long-running looter-shooter franchise since 2019 Borderlands 3. Despite positive early reviews and the franchise's biggest launch to date, Take-Two admitted that its sales were somewhat softer than expected, although he expects the game to be successful in the long term.

While Border franchise has never launched simultaneously on a Nintendo platform in 2020 The Legendary Borderlands Collection brought initial items to the Nintendo Switch while Borderlands 3 coming to Switch in 2023. During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct last April, Take-Two and Gearbox Software confirmed that Borderlands 4 would see a release on the new platform in 2025. It was originally scheduled for release on October 3rd, but the port has since been delayed indefinitely, and Take-Two has confirmed that its development is on hold.

Take-Two CEO Says Switch 2 Is Not Primary Platform, Borderlands 4 Port Still Possible

In an interview with Game File's Stephen Totil, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on the Nintendo Switch 2 and the status of the previously promised Borderlands 4 hybrid console port. Zelnick notes that the delay of the Switch 2 version of the game was meant to address the PC version, which had struggled with performance issues since its launch, noting that Take-Two wanted to make sure the game was as strong as possible before bringing it to other systems. He also confirmed that the development hiatus was not due to technical issues related to the Switch 2, and claimed that a Borderlands 4 port is “doable”.

However, Zelnick stopped short of offering any news on when Nintendo players can expect Borderlands 4 to make it to the Switch 2. Take-Two is a strong early supporter of the Nintendo Switch 2, offering games such as Civilization 7 and sports titles like NBA 2K and WWE 2K on the Nintendo platform. Still, Zelnick told Totil in an interview that the Nintendo system was not the publisher's primary focus, saying, “You can tell from what we're doing and what we're not doing that our primary console platforms remain Sony and Microsoft.”

In one breath, this is good news Borderlands 4The Switch 2 delay is not due to technical issues or problems with Nintendo's hardware. The Switch 2 has proven to be a much more powerful machine than its predecessor, allowing it to host a huge library of third-party titles. While 2K Games doesn't consider the system a “primary platform,” the publisher will still support the Switch 2 through its annual sports titles.

Still, it's disappointing to know Borderlands 4The Switch 2 port has no release window in sight. Borderlands 4 was one of the main third-party titles promised at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in April 2025, with Gearbox president and CEO Randy Pitchford even making an appearance during the showcase. Time will tell if Nintendo Switch 2 owners get the previously promised chance to play Borderlands 4 to a hybrid system sooner rather than later.
