Shooters with better action than Call Of Duty

When it comes to shooting franchises, Call of Duty is number one. Whether gamers are hardcore or casual, chances are they've played one Call of Dutyif not all, or continue playing one of your favorites online. While the campaigns can often be epic and the gun handling pristine, there are other shooters out there, not just first-person shooters, that pack better action.

A classic franchise returns

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is the latest game in Armored Core series that features the most intense mechanical action to date. The majority of the game takes the player through a linear series of missions with large open areas to explore and attack enemies, be it other mechs, towers, or anything in between.

Players can customize their robot with parts and weapons as they progress through the game, and one build can easily make all the difference during a difficult boss fight, such as favoring different runs or ranged melees. Between sliding across the ground to avoid attacks, returning explosives, and firing multiple missiles, players never rest until the mission is cleared. Call of Duty has mechs very rarely featured and definitely not as fast or as robust as those in Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon.

Bulletstorm is a first-person shooter that prioritized humor and creativity above all else and has yet to earn a sequel. Players will be armed with the usual series of rifles and shotguns, albeit with futuristic twists, but the real hook of the game is the environment.

From shooting barrels that cause an explosion to lassoing an enemy and then knocking them off a cliff, there will always be something in the environment that makes for a great kill. New in Fate series was a finishing system where players could brutalize their opponents to keep their health or ammo count in check. Last Mortal Kombat games, these finishers were gooey, though Call of Duty is rated M, Fate is 100% more advanced than this series on every level.

Max Payne 3

Bad holiday vibes

Max Payne 3 is the newest entry in the series, and it's been a while since this pill-popping sleuth hit the scene. Like the previous entries, the titular hero is now a bit older and can't move as well as before. Players will feel every bullet and hit it takes, but the same is true when players return fire.

Even though Max is old, he can still use bullet time to pull off cool moves in missions. This is another game that brings the right mature feel of shooting, celebrating it with great cinematic battles while showing how brutal the weapons are, much like Call of Dutybut much more interesting thanks to Max's noir-filled story, making it one of Rockstar's more forgotten games.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Platforming at its best

It may seem strange to nominate a Ratchet & Clank game like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart before Call of Dutybut Insomniac Games knows what they're doing, and this series has always mixed humor, great gunfights with inventive weapons, and solid platforming.

Combat is all about keeping enemies moving between dashing around them or jumping into the air, all while firing a wild assortment of weapons from standard laser blasts to a pistol that can pixelate enemies. New to this game is dimension switching and two new dual protagonists, Rivet and Kit. “Kiddy” Pixar-level graphics shouldn't put players off, as this is a really cool action shooter.

Saros

Leveling Roguelikes

Saros is the latest bullet-hell roguelike shooter from developer Housemarque. Like Return it used to be, players will have incredibly fast third-person movement speed and gain various weapons and perks while running. What's different about this spiritual sequel is that there's a permanent upgrade tree to boost stats and abilities, like one that can save players from death.

RPGs and roguelikes with progressive systems overcome Call of Duty campaigns, as achievements rarely carry over. An intensity that players can feel Saros' levels where they're constantly dodging shots while also showing off some incredibly devastating moves of their own, that's also something Call of Duty players can only dream.

Ultrakill

Armed robotic arms

Ultrakill is one of the best modern shooters and is only in early access. Aside from going into levels and blasting enemies with larger-than-life weapons, there's not much to expect, from pistols that can bounce coins to a Gatling gun that gets hot when you use it.

The game is presented exclusively in pixel art, but it does not avoid large bursts of blood in a comical and colorful way. It can also be compared to the old ball hell where players have to be constantly on the move or they will be decimated. While shooting can be intense in some situations Call of Duty, Ultrakill is another game that gets the movement right with very satisfying gun-based gameplay.

Titanfall 2

The spiritual successor to CoD

Titanfall 2 he feels like the closest spiritual successor Call of Dutybecause Respawn Entertainment was built by former members of the Infinity Ward team. Unlike the first game, which was a pure multiplayer shooter, this sequel had a campaign that was short but made every second count.

The human combat never lets up, between sliding across the ground to fire off a few shots, or hacking robots to become allies, or running up walls and lobbing grenades at enemies. This is a parkour shooter, and that doesn't even come close to mecha combat, which is just as solid, and the bond that develops between pilot Jack Cooper and his mech, BT, can be both heartwarming and funny.

A rare shooter from PlatinumGames

PlatinumGames does the best work with character action games, but Defeat is a rare exception as their cutting-edge third-person shooter experiment. Equipped with a futuristic suit, the Augmented Reaction Suit, the hero Sam Gideon is able to slow down time in battle when players activate it, like sliding on the ground.

Movement can take some getting used to as the suit's propulsion can be fast when not slow, but with practice players can get used to it. While Call of Duty he's had exoskeleton suits with combat capabilities before, nothing compares to Sam's ARS. The shooting isn't bad either, but overall it's the momentum that's addicting in Vanquish.
