Flames Of Fate could finally get some new information this month

Do you happen to remember when Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate was revealed? May 2021. That's five years ago this month. And it happened quite early, considering what we can now clearly see was a very early stage of development, as visionary creator Yuji Horii and his colleagues wished to unveil another major title in honor of Dragon Quest's 35th anniversary.

Half a decade later and a 40th anniversary live broadcast was announced. Much like the 35th anniversary live stream, with game titles gone and such, there's a good chance we'll finally see the first current information on The Flames of Fate all that time.

But to be clear – there's a slim chance we won't.

The past years

In the latest episode of the KosoKoso broadcast, Yuji Horii let it slip that the 40th anniversary stream is indeed coming, as the epic franchise will reach four decades on May 27th. But that episode has since gone private. Perchance Horii-san wasn't specifically allowed to spill the beans on that before any formal Square Enix announcement.

However, Gematsu caught it all – because founder Sal Romano is lightning fast as always! – and caught the most important thing for posterity:

“We'll be doing a live stream on May 27th. I think we'll be able to announce the next game.” -Yuji Horii, during a KosoKoso broadcast

“Besides the next game, we will also have various other things,” he added, “so please look forward to it.”

Dragon Quest hasn't been completely idle in the five years since we've been told that Dragon Quest XII seemingly exists in some way and will eventually make its way into our hands. In that time, the first, second, third, and seventh games have seen remakes; a new Monsters subseries entry was released; and various other spinoffs, including gachas, also came to market. Most of the 100-episode anime, Adventure of Dai also debuted after The Flames of Fate was announced.

We could compare it to Kingdom Hearts, which my editor-in-chief George Foster loves so dearly all the time. Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced four years ago, in 2022. That means, technically, he's been waiting less time for any semblance of follow-up information on Sora's next big chapter than Dragon Quest fans. But what has Kingdom Hearts been up to since then? Mobile game cancellation? Dragon Quest still serves amazing appetizers. George and the other KH daredevils are slowly starving. Come on Square.
