Negative review Slay The Spire 2 is already mostly a predecessor of Eclipse

Slay the Spire 2 has had a rough start to life. Following up on one of the greatest roguelike games of all time can't be easy, and the Mega Crit team is finding out the hard way.

Just two weeks after the game launched, it suffered the first bombardment of reviews, with players frustrated by nerfs to several of the game's most popular cards. The second followed shortly after when another update appeared and was poorly received. The third review bombing in the game's first two months, and perhaps the most significant, hit late last week.

This time, the piles of negative reviews had nothing to do with the game itself, or any patch it received or nerfs it dished out; instead, a number of “Gamergaters” were unhappy that Anita Sarkeesian was featured in the credits.

She has been in the credits since the game launched on March 5th.

This series of review bombings has been brutal for Slay the Spire 2, as it now receives 14 times more negative reviews in two months than its predecessor did in seven years.

In the nine weeks since its launch, Slay the Spire 2 has received nearly 78,000 negative user reviews on Steam. That left him with an incredible “Mixed” rating in the Valve-owned storefront.

In contrast, in the nearly seven and a half years since the original Slay the Spire was released, that game has only had 5,672 negative reviews. It sits with a rating of “Overwhelmingly positive” – a stark contrast.

Fortunately for the Mega Crit team, this doesn't seem to have much of an impact on gameplay. It regularly has between 100,000 and 200,000 concurrent players on Steam, and estimates suggest that it has sold nearly 7 million copies, bringing in approximately $136 million in revenue.

While this is undoubtedly a frustrating time for developers, this feedback (perhaps sans the weird Anita Sarkeesian stuff) is exactly why they would jump into early access. I have no doubt that given the quality of the first game they will be able to turn things around.
