Witch Hat Atelier Episode 8 Review

Like the spectacle of Wizard's Hat Studio Moving on, Bug Films' adaptation of Kamome Shirahama's fantasy manga series continues to check every box and exceed all fan expectations. Finding a way to bring the original author's whimsical style to life may not have been easy, but the staff clearly saw it as a labor of love, and the final product was worth the wait. Character growth and endless tenacity were the hallmarks of Episode Seven, which ended with the terrifying possibility of Coco losing her memories and love of magic at the hands of the Moralis Knights. Wizard's Hat Studio failed to keep the audience on their toes and the latest episode, as expected, started with a bang.

“The Misgivings of the Knights Moralis” is a straightforward title for the latest episode of the fantasy juggernaut whose members are tasked with upholding the rules of Pact Day — even if it means stealing the memories of a young girl who's just learning the ropes. Easthies, the vice-captain, is all too ready to erase Coco's adoration of all things witchcraft and turn her into an outsider without giving her or Agotto a chance to explain the mistakes she's made. Wizard's Hat Studio Episode 7. Unexpectedly, it's the catapulting Richeh who frees the pair, with the other apprentices and sword-wielding Qifrey also speaking out quickly against the de facto police of the magical world. Somewhat predictably, Coco's reputation as a teacher precedes him.

What started out as a somewhat truncated rescue mission in episode 7 quickly became another trial for Coco, who in the middle of rescuing Custas somehow managed to dry up an entire riverbed with what should have been a fairly weak spell. The Knights Moralis have no patience for those who use forbidden magic, and Easthies is quick to explain that spells powerful enough to change the landscape are war spells that predate the Day of the Pact, making them particularly heinous. The stoic man also reacts strongly to Qifrey's sudden arrival, noting that his apprentices are just as troubled, to which the white-haired man only responds with his usual positivity. Forced in fact listen to Coco and her friends instead of willy-nilly erasing the memories, Easthies lets the girl go after confirming that she bears no marks of the Brimmed Caps, as the mysterious group often tattoo themselves with seals capable of amplifying magic or altering their physical form.

The group is able to return to their business and prepare to return to the studio, but a strange discovery leaves Qifrey shocked. When she finds Coco's cap and ink bottle, she returns them, but the girl excitedly notes that her ink bottle is still full, even though she used it recently in a recent fluffing. A quick inspection is all it takes for Qifrey to tell Olruggio to take the others home as he needed a quick trip to Kalhn for him and Coco. Although she frames it as a fun shopping trip for the young apprentice to finally get her own pen, consulting Nolnoa is the first order of business because something is clearly very wrong.

As The Starry Sword's young assistant Tartah tends to Coco's injured leg, Qifrey quickly (and horrifyingly) discovers that Coco's ink vial has been tampered with by the Brimmed Caps, with one of the group pouring his blood into the pigment. This caused the girl's magic to become wildly powerful, and although such a discovery warrants a trip to the Knights Moralis, Qifrey is once again unwilling to reveal this knowledge to anyone, including Coco. In past episodes, Nolnoa has kept Qifrey's secret and he does so again in episode 8, but this time his behavior makes it seem like he was forced to keep quiet and didn't ask politely.

Magic is a lie that fills the world with color.

In awe of the many bizarre and unique pigments found in the store, Coco busies herself by asking Tartah to name and explain each one. However, when the glasses fall to the ground and are mixed up, the boy suddenly cannot tell them apart, even though they are very different colors. Coco learns that Tartah has Silverwash Syndrome, which gives everything he sees a silvery sheen and leaves him unable to see colors properly. The audience is reminded of the heart Wizard's Hat StudioQifrey later tells Coco that seeing color and noticing the vibrancy of the world is an important part of being a witch. Shirahama's work is truly an ode to the beauty that surrounds us and the possibilities of the blank page.

Learning from your mistakes is not always a painless process

Both Coco and Qifrey struggle with fear of the unknown

This week's episode Wizard's Hat Studio was littered with plenty of intrigue and drama, with the actions of the Brimmed Caps and Qifrey's stealth promising to collide in earnest very soon. However, the final scene caught my eye the most, as after their latest series of trials, the man picks Coco up to sit on his shoulder and promises to do everything in his power to protect her as long as she stays in his studio. Regardless of the secrets he keeps and the occasional ferocity in his gaze, viewers can agree on one thing: Qifrey is to be trusted when it comes to Coco's well-being, even if his actions may be questionable in other areas. Left motherless in an exciting yet terrifying new reality, Coco is far from alone, cared for by a mentor who will stop at nothing to find answers.

Qifrey must seem like a genius to a young girl, and indeed she is an exceptionally powerful witch with decades of specialized knowledge. But even masters always have something to learn and how Wizard's Hat Studio continues, it's clear that Coco's boundless curiosity and willingness to study and persevere reminded Qifrey of the finer aspects of his own personality. It's easy to forget about yourself when you're caught up in the stresses of life, but deep down we all have a little more whimsy than we give ourselves credit for. Episode 8 reminded me that not having all the answers means more adventure is needed.

Everyone has their secrets. Qifrey is only slightly heavier than most.
