PlayStation has announced that it will increase the price PlayStation Plus from 20 May 2026. The PlayStation subscription service was rebranded as the all-new PlayStation Plus in 2022 and includes three tiers: Essential, Extra and Premium. Essential is the cheapest tier and is for those who only need a subscription to play games online. Extra not only allows people to play online, but also has a library of hundreds of modern games for them to play. Finally, Premium has all the benefits of PS Plus Extra plus access to a selection of classic games.
PlayStation Plus previously saw a price increase after rebranding. The first price increase for PS Plus occurred in 2023, when PlayStation increased the cost of the subscription by around 35%. PlayStation's subsequent financial results showed that despite the huge increase in the cost of the service, most subscribers continued to pay. Revenue for PlayStation's subscription service increased year-on-year, not only because of higher fees, but also because more people are buying Sony gaming hardware and subsequently signing up for the service. This is likely due to new game releases that require online play and the growth of the PlayStation 5 user base over time.

Sony gives an update on the profitability of PlayStation Plus
In a rare move, Sony is sharing an update on PlayStation Plus profitability, which the company's investors are likely to see as good news.
PlayStation announces price increase for PS Plus
Taking to social media, PlayStation revealed that starting May 20, 2026, the price of PS Plus will increase in a number of regions due to “ongoing market conditions.” The post didn't name the regions covered in the upcoming change, other than India and Turkey, but it does show prices in US dollars, euros and British pounds. PS Plus has previously become more expensive in certain regions. Notably, these cost changes are similar to the PS Plus price increase in Latin America that took place in 2025. However, this increase is likely to be more far-reaching than previous increases.
The increase will only affect new PS Plus subscribers, with the exception of Turkey and India, where the change will affect everyone. However, if an existing subscriber cancels or allows their subscription to expire, they will have to re-subscribe at the new, higher price. PlayStation only revealed the price change for the Essential tier, with the monthly subscription increasing from $9.99 to $10.99. This may seem like a small increase, but Extra and Premium subscribers will also see a price increase that is likely to be even more substantial.

In March, PlayStation announced a huge increase in console prices, with some models going up by as much as $200. While Sony continues to raise the prices of PlayStation products, its main competitor, Xbox, recently lowered the price of its Game Pass subscription service. Although it also announced Call of Duty will no longer be available as part of a subscription at launch, the Xbox deal is arguably more attractive now that PlayStation has announced a price increase.

According to Sony's Q3 earnings call in February, PlayStation sought to raise the price of PS Plus to offset higher costs due to the lack of memory. The rise of artificial intelligence has led to a global memory problem, as a result of which the prices of these components have risen. New PlayStation CFO Lin Tao has hinted that the company is trying to increase the cost of network services to protect its hardware from price increases. Unfortunately, it seems that consumers ended up with the worst of both worlds, as prices for both were hiked within a matter of months.
