After more than seven decades of stories and adaptations, 007 First Light developer IO Interactive had some big shoes to fill when it decided to introduce a new version of James Bond. 007 First Light shows a younger, less experienced Bond, which promises an exciting fresh take. However, this also brings a lot of risks. Ian Fleming's first James Bond-led story, Casino Royaleit didn't come out until 1953. During that time, the character developed into one of the most famous spies in pop culture.
Because of Bond's reputation, there are many preconceived notions about the character. Whether one is a fan of Fleming's original novels, or was first introduced to the character through the performances of Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig in the various film adaptations, there are many people who have their own idea of what an MI6 agent should be. 007 First LightJames Bond's version is a bold departure, and IO Interactive's Lead Licensing Producer Theuns Smit recently shared with GameRant a fascinating insight into how the developers approached the character.

Introducing a version of James Bond that is both familiar and fresh
With so much bias, IO Interactive has to strike a delicate balance between respecting the source material and legacy while presenting a story that truly feels new. As 007 First Light it reinvents the franchise not only through a new Bond, but is definitely the most important work. A newbie James Bond must share some similar qualities to his past iterations, but also have his own special quirks that set him apart. Choosing which aspects to keep and which to discard can't be easy when it comes to creating a new version of a much-loved character, and Theuns Smit had this to say about the process:
We knew from the very beginning that we wanted to tell our own story, to put together a reworked origin story of a young James Bond. When we saw the opportunity to work on this license, instead of going the familiar route of what was done before, retelling the previous film or something like that, it was very important for us to have a sense of deep creative freedom and put ourselves into the story and the experience we want to bring to the players.
This new James Bond stands on its own. It would be really tempting to rely too heavily on past movies and books, but IO Interactive saw adapting the franchise as a way to create a unique character instead of a copycat. He's an exciting blank slate, and that's one of the main reasons the developers opted for a younger, less experienced Bond.
IN 007 First LightBond hasn't become Agent 00 yet. He's working to carve out his place in this exclusive world, which means he can be more reckless than past versions of him. Seeing James Bond figure out how to be a more effective agent is an interesting premise, and it opens the door to more possibilities for the character since he hasn't fully matured into the role yet. Smit had this to say about the creative freedom Bond allowed developers before 007:
It means we're getting a new look at who this Bond is and who he's destined to become. But what really suits it outside of the narrative aspect is the real sense of progression you as a player go with Bond from a gameplay perspective. You start in Iceland. I made the joke that he's kind of wet behind the ears—not just because he's literally emerging from the ocean—but it's kind of funny that he's still stumbling toward success there because of the determination he has. But then you start training and you get better. So there's this fun tandem of story and gameplay, you're happy to join that journey as a player, and that's what really intrigued us.
Bond's most iconic elements are honored throughout the story, but can feel a bit different at first
There are many basic elements to a James Bond story. From introducing himself as “Bond, James Bond” to the rousing theme song that served as the cornerstone of the film franchise, there are features that many fans consider essential. Fortunately, IO Interactive honors these popular features, but the team behind the game still carefully considered how to pay homage to these aspects while keeping them consistent with Bond's rookie status. Past James Bond games have showcased an established agent who has developed a specific reputation, but this is not the case 007 First Light.
Because he's a rookie, some 007 First LightThe features, specifically the theme song, will not be used as overtly as in past adaptations. However, this does not mean that these important staples are missing. Smith assured that many of these classic elements will be present throughout the game, saying:
I think we definitely try to stay true to the IP. At the end of the day, we're aiming to make it a truly defining James Bond experience as a whole. So when we translate that into gaming, a lot of it always comes back to the type of story we're telling. Since he's on this mission to get his number, we're not going to start the game right off the bat with just the Bondy music, you know, the theme right in it, but we're going to sprinkle it all over and tie it together. So it's a journey and there's this immersion, the story as it goes, but it's definitely super important to us. So I don't think we shy away from any of those Bond elements. We're actually leaning into it pretty hard out of respect and reverence for this IP that's been around for so long. It just feels good to do it fair and square.
Sprinkling the James Bond theme throughout the story to develop with the players as they move closer to attaining 007 status is a clever way to honor such a great song without feeling too heavy-handed. Instead of the other details that made James Bond such a remarkable character, IO Interactive is more interested in other core elements such as Bond's bold nature and 007 First Light's villain, to do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to making the game feel like an authentic James Bond story. The theme song is a staple for Bond as 007, but not as a rookie trying to gain that much-coveted status. The Bond theme means that 007 has fully earned the title, so it makes a lot of sense for IO Interactive to be more subtle with how the song is used in the story.
007 First Light promises a new era of James Bond
There has been a lot of debate over the years about what the best James Bond adaptation is. There are diehards Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton, while others love that Daniel Craig gave the character much more depth. Now, Actor Patrick Gibson takes on the roleand his casting promises an exciting new era for the character. Patrick Gibson's past work with shows like OA and Dexter: Original Sin they've already shown a lot of range, but diving into a role as popular as James Bond is on another level.

After the Daniel Craig era ended with There is no time to diethere have been many questions about the future of James Bond. Dune and Arrival Director Denis Villeneuve is directing another James Bond film, but it's possible that the next big Bond chapter may actually be a gaming one. The new film series will likely be popular, but it would be exciting to see the franchise really shine as a video game franchise this time around.
IO Interactive has already proven that the developer has what it takes to create a strong spy series with Hitman games. It is not clear if 007 First Light is the first step towards creating an ongoing game series, but seeing how this compelling approach to developing such an iconic character extends will be exciting to watch unfold when the game releases later this month.
