Free Pixel Art Idler RPG Task Bar Hero has over 200,000 players on Steam

TBH: Task Bar Hero is an idle game where pixel art characters engage in RPGs at the bottom of the screen while you attend to whatever else you need to do. Since it's free and requires almost no input from you to function, it's proving to be a huge hit on Steam, attracting hundreds of thousands of players.

TBH: Task Bar Hero is a free-to-play RPG that takes place on your taskbar

Developed and published by Nugem, Task Bar Hero is literally an entire and surprisingly expansive RPG that takes place almost entirely on your taskbar. Equip your characters with items, skills, and gear, then send them on adventures while you shop for things on Amazon or do some work.

Not that I ever watch these little pixel art heroes do their thing on my taskbar during work hours. By no means. It couldn't have been me.

TBH's simplicity, combined with the ability to run it while you're doing something else, and even completely off your computer, along with the fact that it's free, has led to it quickly becoming a hit on Steam. While it was introduced to less than 10,000 players last week, that number went in the opposite direction of most new games as word continued to spread.

Within three days, the number of concurrent players of the protagonist reached 100,000 for the first time, and just a few minutes ago, three more days later, this number doubled and broke the 200,000 player mark according to SteamDB. This makes it currently the sixth most played game on Steam, surpassing the likes of Forza Horizon 6 and Slay the Spire 2.

It's only a matter of time before it moves past Apex Legends into fifth place, as it's only a few thousand players away from live service behemoth Respawn.

While the core of the game is to let your characters do their thing, you need to prepare them for the journey ahead before the RPG begins. Level up your characters and their gear as you go, and map out unique strategies in hopes that they'll play out the way you envision them when you move RPG action to your dashboard.

There are three acts, four difficulties, over 50 monsters to fight, and over 500 items to use to make your build unique to you. There are also different packs and classes that you can add to TBH through its DLC. Most of the add-ons aren't free like the base game, but even if you get hooked on Task Bar Hero and decide you need it all, the total combined cost comes out to just over $20.
