The biggest games permanently closed in 2026

Topic games will shut down permanently has become much more common in recent years. No matter how big the names are behind the scenes, and no matter how popular the initial launch may have been, it seems that no game is immune to live services being shut down, and 2026 has once again shown that the number of retirements will continue to rise.

However, in some cases, you still have access to offline features and modes that can keep the action going indefinitely, even if the publishers or developers have decided to close the servers in the project. The next few months may be your last chance to experience these games online. After that, it may very well feel like a ghost town, with no new content and no other players wandering around.

LET IT DIE

Another cult classic gone

• Blackout Date: August 31st

• Dedicated offline replacement on the go.

After almost ten years of operation LET IT DIE is finally coming to the end of its online life. The violent action roguelike has built a loyal following thanks to its bizarre style, brutal difficulty and unforgettable Uncle Death mascot. Although it never hit an insane amount of players, the game managed to maintain a decent cult following that continued until 2026.

Sadly, the developers have confirmed that the game's online service will end on August 31, 2026, with a standalone offline version planned for later this year to allow players to continue climbing after the main product shuts down. I played the game at launch and a while later on another platform and saw the appeal and potential, from the intense combat to the addictive loot loop. The sequel may capture some of the same energy, but it never comes close to the carnage seen in the original.

NBA 2K25

Live service rotation strikes again

• Superseded by the sequel

NBA 2K25 it may still look like a current release, but its long-term future was mapped out long before the game even launched. Such is the way of annual franchises such as FIFAthe focus always shifts to the latest and greatest product, no matter how good the sales numbers or player numbers have been, meaning that even though they're less than two years old, it's time to turn off the lights 2K25.

The mixed reviews don't paint the whole picture, and I actually think this game was one of the better ones in the series, at least in the last few years. There will still be chances to play offline and enjoy some less competitive matches, but this cultural trend of constant closure still feels quite unfair to consumers as they are not only expected but forced to pay constant premiums just to play online.

Battlefield Hardline

A good try that couldn't quite last

• Offline content is still available.

Battlefield Hardline was controversial when it launched, swapping out traditional military warfare for a cops-versus-criminals theme that was much faster-paced and less focused on large-scale destruction. However, over time, many other players and I came to appreciate his new perspective on the game Battlefield formula, especially its memorable multiplayer modes and surprisingly fun campaign that added something new to an otherwise stale genre.

Unfortunately, overlords EA have announced that online services for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will end in 2026, closing the book forever on a truly unique experience. It makes sense because the declining numbers make it harder to justify keeping servers online. Fortunately, the single-player campaign survives Hard line does not disappear completely after switching off. PC players will also avoid the shutdown, with online functionality continuing there, at least for now.

DiRT Rally 2.0

No one can race forever

• Time trials, peer-to-peer and other modes remain active.

DiRT Rally 2.0 earned a reputation as one of the best rally games of all time, thanks to its much more challenging driving mechanics, from handling to more realistic stages that added a sense of authenticity to each race. While newer racing titles have come along since its release, few have managed to replicate the same blend of accessibility and simulation depth that made it such a favorite among motorsport enthusiasts.

As great as the game is, the end of online support is on the horizon and marks the end of an era for one of the most impressive titles in the racing genre. Still, it's nice to see that the career mode, custom events, and extensive collection of rally locations will be available offline, ensuring you can keep drifting long after the sun goes down.

There is no offline feature here

• All the big names suddenly disappeared.

• Even the most stable games can crash.

Not every shutdown in 2026 gets the same offline support, as some online experiences were never intended to be played offline and the developers haven't shown they want to change that. Some big names like I'm naked and The Elder Scrolls: Blades join the growing list of games that have struggled to maintain a long-term audience despite having big franchise names and huge community support behind them.

New worldhowever, is a different case. Instead of shutting down immediately, Amazon is removing in-game purchases and ending parts of its monetization strategy before the final shutdown in early 2027. I'm personally going to take one last expedition into the world and hope that in the future, developers will look back and learn from the mistakes they made here to bring better content after their games launch, even if things go south.
