The series quickly caught the attention of fans and received its first anime by Nippon Animation on October 16, 1999, but its real hit was its second adaptation by Madhouse, which was released on October 2, 2011.

Regardless of the anime's success, Hunter x Hunter the series has become incredibly popular worldwide and fans have fallen in love with the sheer quality delivered in the manga whenever it drops, making it a huge success despite not having an ongoing anime series. Collective sales of Yoshihiro Togashi's manga have officially surpassed 150 million

Most younger generation anime and manga fans know Togashi for his hit series Hunter x Hunter. After all, the series turned out to be his biggest financial success, by a long shot. That being said, Togashi has another extremely successful manga from the 90s, and this is it Yu Yu Hakusho. Back in my time, Yu Yu Hakusho was comparable to Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk and Berserk.

This manga began serialization on December 3, 1990 in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #51 and ended on July 25, 1994 in Issue #32, with a total of 19 volumes. While the Yu Yu Hakusho serialization was shorter, it was also extremely successful, with the series ending up with over 50 million sales. That gives the series an average of 2.6 million sales per volume, exactly the same number as Hunter x Hunter in this regard. When combining both Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakushowe can see that Togashi's sales numbers are far more impressive.

Together, the new record of 100+ million sales of Hunter x Hunter and over 50 million of Yu Yu Hakusho make Togashi the mangaka with over 150 million sales to his name. This character makes him one of the best-selling manga authors of all time.

We were all extremely excited to know that Yoshihiro Togashi's Hunter x Hunter has reached a huge milestone. The success of the franchise continues, despite the setbacks it faced due to hiatus. While most stories are forgotten when the hiatus becomes frequent, Hunter x Hunter keeps fans coming back for more every time they return to Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine. On June 28, 2026, the manga finally returned in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #31 with chapter 411, much to the excitement of millions of fans.

Since the manga will continue for at least a few months, sales will only increase. Seeing how the manga was able to go from 84 million to 100 million in just 4 years with a limited release volume and no anime to back it up, we can expect a steady pace moving forward. Togashi has already completed at least 20 chapters and is working on more than 30 new chapters. That's about 3 volumes worth of content to expect over the next year or so. In conjunction with the new Hunter X Hunter Volume 39, which will be released on July 3, 2026, we can expect the series' biggest sales increase in years.

If Hunter x Hunter's should the anime come back, then the backlog of sales and rekindled fan interest would be even greater. At the moment, there are quite a few reports regarding the return of the anime, but nothing is official. Hopefully we'll get more information regarding his potential anime return soon. For now, we can all enjoy the ongoing contest arc, serialized every week, picking up where the story left off two years ago in December 2024. The Hunter x Hunter's Succession Contest is reaching its climax and we finally have current main character Kurapika back in action. There is still more than a month left for the Black Whale to reach its destination and for the new Kakin King to be introduced.

Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi is available to read for free through Manga Plus and Viz Media. The manga is currently back and released weekly.
