Grand Theft Auto 6 has officially entered the most dangerous part of its marketing cycle, the part where fans finally know what's being asked of them. After years of teasers, speculation, leaks, delays and theories, GTA 6 pre-orders are now live and the price of the game immediately became one of the biggest controversies surrounding it. The Standard Edition costs $79.99, the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99 and GTA 6 physical buyers don't even get the disc in the box. In any other game, this combination would undoubtedly cause serious buyer revolt.
For GTA 6although that's where things get a little complicated. Fans are understandably frustrated with the price, the physical release of the code in the box, and the amount of content from the Ultimate Edition locked out by the higher price. As a result, Reddit threads are filled with players calling the move greedy, dirty, disappointed, and frustrating. At the same time, those same complaints keep revealing the uncomfortable truth behind Rockstar's entire strategy—that is GTA 6 is, like it or not, the one game that many gamers are willing to complain about, criticize, and still buy.

GTA 6's cover girl issues a new official statement about her apparent use
The reported cover girl for Grand Theft Auto 6, Gabriela Chiquin, makes a brand new official statement on the situation.
Ultimate Edition GTA 6 has already crossed the line of many fans
First for $80 GTA 6 this might sound like the biggest problem here. Sure, this always bothered some players, but it was also one of the easiest prizes for Rockstar to defend and double down on. GTA 6 is not just a normal release of the game. Rather, it is a sequel to one of the most successful games of all time, more than ten years have passed since then. GTA 5 launched and the entire industry is moving towards higher priced major releases anyway.

However, selling is more difficult GTA 6Ultimate Edition. Rockstar's own support page states that the Ultimate Edition includes the base game, an Ultimate Edition upgrade, several vehicles, weapons, clothing, shops, fashion shops, a tattoo parlor, a salon, a clothing store, a resort, and a collection of classic cars. He also says that the bonuses are “woven through all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story”, with new items uncovered in each chapter.
GTA 6 is, like it or not, the one game that many gamers are willing to complain about, criticize, and still buy.
Naturally, this description is exactly why some fans are upset GTA 6and they are probably allowed to. Exclusive cars, clothes, weapons or cosmetics are one thing, but the entire shops and story-related rewards are a completely different matter. When premium content like this looks like it should already be part of the base game, it starts to feel like a part of the game has been purposefully separated for players willing to spend $20 more.
As is known, Reddit realized this almost immediately. In one r/GTA6 post by the123king-reddit, fans like YeetLord__ pointed out that this was a “huge red flag” for GTA 6specifically states that it “sets an appalling precedent for the future monetization of this game”. Other fans expressed similar sentiments, with user Two-Space stating, “That's a lot of content shut down,” and user goobcs saying it's “crazy” to lock so much content behind a paywall.
But that's actually not the only thing at the heart of this whole controversy GTA 6 fans are upset about the prices, but that they are upset because they care too much about the game to not upgrade to the Ultimate Edition. In other words, it feels to many as if Rockstar knew that players would mindlessly spend an extra $20 on a game no matter what, so they stuffed their most expensive edition with as much content as they could to make the extra money worth spending. Really, GTA 6 fans should feel taken advantage of but at the same time it's still up to them to buy or not.
The Code-in-Box GTA 6 physical release makes it even worse
The physical version also became a major issue. Rockstar has already confirmed it GTA 6The physical release includes a digital download code inside the box and that the disc will not be included. For gamers who still care about owning, keeping, reselling, collecting, or simply shelving a disc, this removes much of the point of buying a physical copy in the first place. Of course, this is one area where the backlash is particularly understandable.
r/PlayStation GTA 6 pre-order megathread by P_Jiggy shows how divided players are already. Some users have said that the lack of disc is enough to make them skip the pre-order or avoid the console version. Others were already debating whether to buy the digital Ultimate Edition or get the box, even though they knew the physical version only contained a code. For example, user AreYouOkayMateX4332 called the move a “betrayal” of Rockstar customers, while user thekipling said they were “in no rush” and that their backlog would hold them back until a legitimate physical copy was available.
Again, this split is exactly why Rockstar will likely get away with it. Some players draw the line and do no wrong. But enough players will see GTA 6 as too big to miss, too important to skip, or too exciting to wait for, the backlash may never be strong enough to significantly hurt the game in the long run.
Rockstar knows that GTA 6 is no ordinary game
Most games have to convince players that they are worth the money, but GTA 6 he has another problem. Instead, it must avoid convincing players that they are not worth the money. A new IP, an annualized sequel, or a smaller open-world game can't afford to enter the market with so much price controversy, but GTA 6 it can, because the demand was already there before Rockstar even revealed the price of the base game and its Ultimate Edition.

The players spent years healing GTA 6 as another inevitable moment in the game. Other publishers were reportedly wary of the release, fans dissected every frame of the trailer, and the game became a cultural event before it even launched, giving Rockstar a level of leverage that most video game publishers simply don't have. Gamers may hate the idea of spending $100 on the Ultimate Edition, and they may hate that the physical version doesn't include a disc, but if the game itself looks like the generational leap fans have been waiting for, many of those complaints boil down to the same sentence: “I still want to play it, and I'm going to play it.”
Fans prove what Rockstar has without wanting to
But the most telling part of the reactions on Reddit is the fact that any fan anger about the situation ends up sitting right next to resignation. Players speak up GTA 6's Ultimate Edition, questioning the lack of a disc in the physical copy and criticizing Rockstar for pushing further into premium digital content. Then, sometime in the same thread, they admit that they still plan to buy it, which is the exact reason why Rockstar will probably pass.
Of course, therein lies the real danger for the rest of the industry. If GTA 6 starts at $80 with the Ultimate Edition at $100, a physical edition with a code in the box and premium content linked to the story, then it succeeds anyway, other publishers will no doubt take notice. GTA 6 it may be uniquely positioned to survive this backlash, but the precedent it sets will not remain unique for long. So fans have every right to be concerned, because it's not just concerns GTA 6but the worry of what will happen after Rockstar proves that players will tolerate it from one game they can't miss.
At the same time, Rockstar's advantage is clear here. GTA 6 is the rare game that can make players angry about a purchase and excited about making it in the same breath. Fans are upset because Rockstar is demanding more from them than they expected. But Rockstar will get away with it, because for a large number of those fans, the answer will probably still be yes.
