Ash Ketchum's Pokemon The journey was filled with countless challenges, from intense league battles to dangerous encounters with Team Rocket members. Still, he overcame each of them with the help of the many Pokemon he caught and invited to join his team.
The character's 25-year journey to becoming a Pokémon Master would not have been possible without his best companions. However, not every Pokemon lived up to expectations. A few of Ash Ketchum's Pokemon may have been released early, not only because of their underwhelming abilities and poor win-loss records, but also because they were rarely useful during his decades-long journey.

Tauros won the big one once, then was rarely used
Ash Ketchum's adventures in the Kanto region wouldn't be complete if he didn't hunt down not just one, but a total of 30 Taurus. For most of the series, Ash's Tauros are simply seen wandering and stewing in Professor Oak's field, waiting to be called into battle on occasion. However, it was never made clear which Tauros individual was the strongest of the herd, if any indeed stood out.
While one of Ash's Tauros once defeated a Venusaur in the Orange League and even bested Fernando's Tauros in a head-to-head matchup, the creature later fought more challenging battles, including Gary Oak's Nidoqueen. Probably the best decision Ash could have made was to accept one of the offers from the trainers willing to trade for his Tauros and allow at least one of them to gain more combat experience elsewhere.

The torture was intimidating but ineffective
Despite Muk's intimidating appearance, he wasn't particularly effective in battle, and the notorious foul smell that oozed from his Poke Ball was another downside to Ash bringing the creature with him. Unfortunately, although Muk may have experienced some off-screen development during his time with Professor Oak, Ash rarely used him in battles.
Muk's only notable win was against Jeanette's Bellsprout, which she defeated with a body slam. He was largely sidelined aside from this battle, later reappearing only to be affected by the sleeping powder spilled by James' Victreebel and eventually losing to Gary Oak's Scizor after being overpowered by Swift.
8
Torkoal had heart, but not enough victory
Among Ash's Fire-type Pokémon, Torkoal is often considered one of the weakest, mostly due to its poor battle records. Coupled with his emotional sensitivity and inability to evolve, Torkoal was arguably better when he was released as he struggled to consistently contribute to Ash's team despite his determination and strong moves.
While Torkoal was far from useless in one of the battles at Ash's Gym, even earning a victory over Norman's Slakoth, he later became a punching bag for two Legendary Pokémon, suffering crushing defeats that severely damaged his reputation. Unfortunately, there was no coming back from these losses.
7
Gligar needed more than evolution
Similar to Torkoal, Gligar is an emotionally sensitive Pokémon. He often cries, is afraid of fighting stronger opponents, and is often discouraged when things don't go his way. Unfortunately, Gligar also had a poor combat record, most notably failing to defeat the intimidating Gliscor who led his former pack.
Although Gligar eventually evolved into Gliscor and underwent significant character development, it still fell short of becoming one of Ash's most reliable Pokémon, with its strongest performances coming after extensive training under McCann, the Master of Aerial Battles. While Gligar managed to earn an impressive win over Paul's Drapion, he still fell short against stronger opponents like Electivire and Ninjask.
6
Palpitoad rarely won when it mattered most
Despite Palpitoad's loud and aggressive nature, he rarely fared well in Ash's battles. While Palpitoad boasted a powerful moveset that included Mud Shot, Hydro Pump, Sludge Wave, and Supersonic, Palpitoad often struggled to secure decisive victories for Ash, even in battles where he had a clear type advantage.
Like Torkoal, Palpitoad did well in less important battles, but rarely proved to be one of Ash's most reliable Pokemon when the stakes were highest. For example, Palpitoad suffered a disappointing loss to Elesa's Emolga and could only draw against Stephan's Zebstrika despite having the type advantage in both matchups.
5
Boldore had great potential but poor results
If Boldore evolved into Gigalith, it could become a stronger and more versatile Pokémon, offering more offensive power and defensive resilience in Ash's key battles. The creature can only evolve into Gigalith through trading, which ultimately prevented Ash from unlocking its full potential.
Although Boldore scored a decisive victory by defeating Gerald's Reuniclus with Rock Blast in the second round of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup, his subsequent battles were largely unsuccessful, with Boldore being eliminated despite his impressive durability. At one point it even lost against Koffing. As a result, many fans began to favor his pre-evolved form, Roggenrola, believing him to be more resourceful and consistently effective in battle.
4
Unfezant had wings but no wins
Unfezant suffered a similar fate to Pidgeotto, as the flying-type Pokémon had more losses than wins on its record despite evolving through all stages of its evolution line. Even after becoming a fully evolved Unfezant, it rarely displayed the strength or consistency expected of one of Ash's regional bird Pokemon.
Unfezant's most notable contribution to Ash's team was her victory over Skyla Swanna, which secured the Unova badge. However, aside from this success, she struggled to gain more victories for Ash's team, leading many fans to feel that replacing her with a more reliable Pokémon would be a better decision.
3
Snivy relied too much on attraction
Ash gained Snivy's respect for his skill and happy relationship with Pikachu after repeatedly trying to forcibly capture the Grass-type creature. She proved to be one of the most difficult Pokemon for Ash to catch, mainly due to her arrogant and selfish personality, which unfortunately did not translate into much combat effectiveness.
Snivy primarily relies on her draw ability to immobilize opponents, then follows up with attacks like Vine Whip and Leaf Blade to finish the battle. Once Attract fails, or when Snivy faces same-gender opponents like Elesa's Emolga, she is often at a significant disadvantage and will likely end up on the losing side of the matchup.
2
Oshawott was one of Ash's least reliable starters
Oshawott is one of the most adorable starter Pokemon in the series, but is also often considered one of the weaker water-type starters in terms of overall battle performance. In almost every battle Oshawott is involved in, he often appears clumsy and clumsy, unable to properly utilize his skills, and consequently suffering repeated defeats.
While Oshawott's battles are fun to watch due to his antics, he almost always fails to achieve good results. After failing to defeat Trip's Tranquill, Lenora's Watchog, Chilli's Pansear, and Cheren's Herdier, the losses continued to pile up for the adorable water-type creature.
1
Pidgeotto was outmatched in all of Kanto
Pidgeotto was one of Ash's first companions Pokemon. The creature accompanied Ash throughout much of his Kanto journey, battling powerful Gym Leaders, fending off Team Rocket, and serving as one of his most reliable partners. However, Pidgeott's fight record is one of the worst in the entire series.
It was rare to see Pidgeotto win a solo battle, as many of his opponents were able to take him out fairly easily. From Samurai's Pinsir to Brock's Geodude and Koga's Venomoth, Pidgeotto suffered one defeat after another, struggling to secure meaningful victories throughout his time on Ash's team.
