How to unlock Space Marine Companion in Rogue Trader

Ulfar is an absolutely indispensable companion Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader which players can recruit in Act 3. Unlike many other members of your party, Ulfar won't approach you directly, or actually try to join you. You must take the initiative to talk him into joining your party, although you can only do so after you pass Rogue Trader's more exciting battles.

How to unlock Ulfar in Rogue Trader

You can find Ulfar locked in a cage inside the Anatomical Opera House in Commorragh. After Tervantias removes the brain worm from your head and returns all of your equipment, you can find Ulfar's cage just outside the Haemonculus operation floor. Make sure you communicate with Ulfar himself, not the magnifying glass icon above his head.

You can only enter the Anatomical Opera after completing your first fight in the Arena, which you get after completing the commissar and malevolence business.

Ulfar refuses to join your party, citing that Tervantias owns him. In true CRPG mode, you must talk to Tervantias and convince him to hand over Ulfar to you by choosing the following dialogue options:

  1. Return to Tervantias

  2. Choose the second option (“Master, let me take the Space Marine you are keeping in a cage”)

  3. Give Tervantias a bag of samples (if you have any), your own meat, or offer Yrliet if she's in your party

    • The meat you loot from the two Khymer from the Arena fight counts as samples. Otherwise, kill Malice and grab his stash. If you offer Yrliet, she will be injured but survive.

  4. Choose the fourth option (“Surely the loss of some mon-keigh could never hinder the work of a great mind like yours”)

After he bribes and greases Haemoncul, he gives you the key to Ulfar's cage. Return to the space marine in the cage and select the following dialogue options:

  1. “I need your help”

  2. “Tervantias gave you to me”

  3. “So you're a coward?”

  4. [If you have the Dogmatic – Adherent Conviction] Recite the Warrior's Litany

    • Selecting this option will automatically make Ulfar agree to join your party

After this quick exchange, Ulfar will rank up and officially become a member of your party.

How good is Ulfar in Rogue Trader?

Ulfar's place in the party is a bit redundant. His role overlaps with Argenta, except he leans more towards melee/close-quarters, but if you put him on that, then he'll overlap with Abelard. Ulfar is a Soldier/Arch-Militant by default, and despite his huge frame, he's best handled as a ranged character (mainly because Abelard is significantly more durable than him, as ironic as that sounds).

Ulfar has a special property that allows him to revive after being shot down in battle. While he's down, other characters can use him as cover. It also takes up four tiles of space, making it a bit more difficult to maneuver when you're fighting in tight areas.

Since Ulfar doesn't have abilities that reliably give him temporary damage or defensive buffs, he won't last long if you throw him in front of an enemy group without support. However, he has an innate ability to move after attacks and has access to many powerful offensive skills that can lead to very explosive turnovers when played correctly.

The main problem with Ulfar Rogue merchant is its insufficient equipment. He can only be equipped with heavy Astartes weapons and gear, most of which are locked away deep under the Drusian trade catalog, or can only be obtained after some difficult fights later in Act 4. However, once you get his gear, you'll see some silly numbers like 105% damage reduction, 95% parry, and 80% dodge.

Honestly, at first it's hard to recommend taking Ulfar instead of a well-equipped Argent or Abelard, but once you build him, he's the closest thing to a literal tank in this game. I had a lot of fun being an Ulfar barrel – stuffing the Heavy Bolter down the throats of my enemies. He lives up to his position as a space marine and makes a toy out of many fights.
