Fallout 5 Takes note of Fallout 4's approach to FEV

Source of super mutants

FEV, also known as Forced Evolutionary Virus, is a staple worldwide Fallout franchise. Originally used as a biological weapon, the virus has a long history in the series thanks to the creation of the Super Mutants and Fallout 4 showed FEV in a whole new light. In the story of this chapter, the Institute conducted years of experiments involving FEV. Through trial and error, Institute scientists released mutant test subjects into the wild and wreaked havoc on the Commonwealth.

The Institute's FEV created super mutants who were large, muscular humanoids who boasted resistance to radiation in addition to their strength. Their posture is more upright than that of their other mutant counterparts, and they also have the ability to have rudimentary speech, unlike the poor speech of the Vault 87 Super Mutants.

Institute Super Mutants are capable of building fortresses and setting traps, making them a significant threat.

Fallout 5 introduces a new kind of super mutant

Depending on where Fallout 5 comes to fruition, it could leave the door wide open for a new type of super mutant. Perhaps another secretive or villainous group like The Institute was able to somehow experiment with the FEV and create a never-before-seen version of the Super Mutants. Whether they are stronger or more intelligent, Super Mutants who play at least a small role in the story would go a long way. Another fascinating angle would be to introduce a colony where super mutants and human survivors have managed to co-exist peacefully. In the past, there were civilized and hostile supermutants, such as New Vegas'Marcus a Fallout 4is Uncle Leo, but a full-fledged co-op could be a compelling story to explore.

Fallout 5 Mysterious Path

Bethesda's next move

Expectations are high from Bethesda at the moment. After a lackluster reaction to Star field and its recent DLC, A broken universe, The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 have a tough road ahead of them. Mostly positive reaction to Amazon Prime Fallout series has reignited interest in the franchise, making the path forward even more challenging for Bethesda. In order to meet expectations, Fallout 5 will have the difficult task of balancing both classic body lore with fresh concepts.

While the game will likely need to do more to excite longtime fans, a unique take on Super Mutants could be a strong starting point. With the success of the live-action adaptation and revival Fallout 76 and other single player games, it will be interesting to see how Bethesda uses these successes to inform Fallout 5overall story.
