Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood needs to put gameplay first to move the series forward

Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood marks the return of a beloved Nintendo franchise, but it also faces the challenge of revitalizing a series that has been dormant for nearly a decade. As the first new story in the series since the closure of original developer AlphaDream, Brotherhood carries the weight of reviving the magic that made previous Mario & Luigi games so popular.

How to fast travel in Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood

Fast travel is done via the green and blue pipes, p green pipes leading from one place to another within the islandand blue pipes leading to and from other islands. Blue pipes are located at the beginning of where you spawn on the island and on Shipshape Island, and blue pipes can only take you to other starting areas of other islands. Green Pipes have set locations that they lead to, which are usually just further down the island you're already on. Green Pipes are initially in a block that must be jumped to unlock this location as a fast travel point.

When Mario jumps on the green pipe and interacts with it you will arrive at a predetermined location on this island interacting with the blue pipe will open a map with all available islands to return to.

There's no way to fast travel to another island from a green pipe or anywhere when you're deep on an island, which means you'll have to go back to the start of the island to leave, but Green Pipes make this trip easier. When you first travel to an island, there is no way to fast travel from that island until it is reconnected. Although you will be able to explore the green pipes for fast travel on this island, you will be stuck until you are able to complete the story of this island.

You should go back to the previous islands in Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood

While you can try to complete all the content on the island on your first trip, more content opens up after you leave, giving you even more reasons to come back whenever you can.

  • Look for the Sprite bulbs
  • Connecting the island opens up new paths on the island to reach new places.
  • Returning with new tools will allow you to overcome previous obstacles.
  • Side quests almost always require returning to previous islands.

Aside from these options, it's always a good idea to go back and level up before going to a new island, as you never want to get stuck on an island that's too difficult for your current level.
