Key things
- Samsung may be developing a handheld gaming console with a foldable screen.
- A patent for the device was filed in 2022, but Samsung has not confirmed details or production plans.
- A foldable screen could protect the device and make it more portable, which could appeal to fans of handheld games.
Electronics maker Samsung could be working on its own take on a handheld gaming console. A recently discovered patent suggests that this console could include the modern folding screen feature that Samsung used in its Galaxy Fold and Flip phones.
While there were once a few companies with competing handheld game consoles, the introduction of high-tech smartphones and free apps seemed to put them down for a while. The Nintendo Switch was one of the few popular portable gaming devices for a while, but it has since been joined by the likes of Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and PlayStation Portal. It seems Samsung may see a future in handheld gaming based on this patent.

Samsung is upping its storage game with a 1TB version of its popular Evo Select line of MicroSD cards.
Samsung Display Co., as originally spotted by 91mobiles, has filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization for an “ornamental design for an electronic game console.” The patent includes several technical drawings of the device's design, which looks quite similar to the Nintendo Switch when laid down. However, the unique feature here is that the device seems to fold in half. When closed, the device looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip as it is not as tall as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold.
Is Samsung designing a new gaming system or something else?
Aside from this patent, Samsung hasn't hinted at designing a handheld gaming device. It's also worth noting that this patent was originally filed for back in 2022, so this design could have been revised, delayed, or even canceled at that point. While each iteration has arguably improved the design, users of Samsung's foldable screen phones have sometimes reported issues with the hinges, which are a major part of the foldable screen design. This may affect the company's interest in developing a gaming console that often faces abuse at the hands of younger users.
However, the idea of Samsung designing a pocket-sized computer like this has some significant advantages as well. A foldable screen would help protect the device during transportation and ensure that the screen does not get scratched. It would also be more portable and easier to carry. While the Nintendo Switch is light and relatively thin, it's also wide, so it can't be easily slipped into a pocket like the DS series.
Fans of Samsung and handheld gaming will have to wait to hear more from the company. It's also possible that Samsung isn't looking to make its own handheld and could instead design this screen to work on another company's device. Samsung has reportedly worked with Nintendo to produce OLED screens for the gaming giant, so it's not out of the question.
