A great light hearted Isekai anime with almost no drama

Isekai anime covers many genres and tones, but these shows generally steer clear of drama.

While the plots may not be the most exciting, farming anime can satisfy the need for peace and relaxation at the end of the day. With likeable characters, cute animals and a beautiful rural setting, the best anime about farming connects viewers with rare perspectives in stories that stay with them long after the show ends.

Updated December 19, 2024 by Mark Sammut: Farming anime they just aren't that common. For example, Fall 2024 did not include a series covering this topic, and its successor, Winter 2025, will continue this trend. Still, there are a few classics that touch on farm life, and one of them is a movie made by an all-time legendary studio. Click the link below to go to this recommendation.

MyAnimeList: 5.96

As I improved my farm-related skills, I somehow got stronger is a bit odd because despite featuring a farmer prominently, it barely touches on farming. Basically, Al Wayne's determination to farm his crops allowed him to break through his limit and become so powerful that he can knock down a dragon with a carrot. Naturally, he gets involved with all sorts of troubled people (including the princess), ending his peaceful life.

Honestly, As I improved my farm-related skills, I somehow got stronger not good by most metrics. The animation is poor, the characters are one-dimensional, and the world doesn't have much of an identity beyond “medieval fantasy”. Still, the main character's bluntness about the royal family can be pretty funny, and the series occasionally veers into “so bad it's good” territory. That is, as far as it goes anime about farming are concerned, this show is probably the worst.

7 No-Rin

MyAnimeList: 6.74

Set in an agricultural school, No-Rin is the story of a pop idol who moves to a rural town from Tokyo. There are plenty of farming scenes to enjoy, but this comedy anime relies heavily on slapstick humor and fan service. There are also many anime tropes to be found here, with the character designs being very recognizable.

The plot promises a closer look at a damaged young woman trying to find herself, along with a young man who isn't quite sure what he wants out of life…besides marriage to this idol. A good, short, farming anime, this rom-com will give viewers a good dose of absurdity and a relaxed atmosphere.

6 Only yesterday

MyAnimeList: 7.44

Release date
July 20, 1991

Director
Isao Takahata

Running time
118 minutes

Studio
Studio Ghibli

Ghibli needs no introduction to anime fans, but not every film released by the studio is as well known as, for example, Spirited away.Only yesterday is a very different type of experience than the more popular Ghibli-related films, especially those created by Hayao Miyazaki. Compared to these fantasy masterpieces, Isao Takahata's films tend to be more grounded in reality, telling smaller stories that are (sometimes) slice-of-life based. Grave of the Fireflies is the director's best-known work, closely followed The Story of Princess Kaguya; however, Only yesterday is a pretty great movie in its own right, though it may not reach the same heights as those other projects.

These Studio Ghibli films prove that not all animated films are for children.

Although the film does not contain many scenes of actual farming, one of the supporting characters, Toshio, is a farmer, and the main character, Taeko, is drawn to this lifestyle. After years spent toiling in the big city, Taeko visits her family in the countryside, a process that prompts a constant stream of nostalgic memories of her childhood. She remembers the good along with the bad, which causes her confusion when she finds herself longing to stay in the life she once rejected. Although at a rather slow pace, Only yesterday is an emotional character study about a man who feels lost because he needs to reassess what is truly important to him.

5 Wolf children

MyAnimeList: 8.57

Release date
July 21, 2012

Director
Mamoru Hosoda

Studio
Studio Chizu

Where to watch
Crunchyroll

Rotten Tomatoes score
95%

Mamoru Hosoda's award-winning anime film, available on Crunchyroll, is less about farming and more about the struggles of a single mother as her half-wolf children transition into adolescence, but there's still some great farming to be seen.

For part of the film, the main character Hana starts farming and gets used to living in the countryside instead of the city. Most of the film takes place in this rural setting, and like the rest of the film, it's amazing! The fields are dreamy, Hana actually works the land, and there's even a grumpy but kind old man who's happy to give her advice.

Wolf children is often considered one of the best anime films of recent times, not least because of the sense of relief and hope that washes over viewers when Hana and her family move out of town.

As great as this movie is, the farming is a very small part
Wolf children
so it cannot be placed higher than this current location.

She either grows all of these things herself or visits a wizard shop where a more experienced wizard grows them. Whenever he collects a new ingredient, there is almost always an explanation. Unfortunately, it's all fake! It's all just made up for the charm of this specific world, even if it draws heavily on classic European and Japanese folklore.

Regardless, the story is absolutely charming and the farm vibes are packed. There is only one season of this show available on Crunchyroll, but the manga has many volumes.

While the farm serves as the main setting,
Flying witch
only slightly focuses on actual farming.

3 Farm life in another world

MyAnimeList: 7.56

Farm life in another world is an isekai harem anime that contains a lot of farming information. The farm facts are pretty basic, but also accurate. For example, the main character finds out that he needs to pile dirt on the potatoes so they don't spoil.

One thing that sets this show apart from similar anime is the fact that the main character basically marries the first girl that shows up. It seems like a mistake at the beginning of the harem, but nine times out of ten the protagonist ends up with the first girl anyway! Other female characters are then added to the mix, which also include about a dozen horned wolves and another dozen giant hairy spiders.

The art is incredibly vibrant and spirited, perfect for showcasing fresh vegetables and the surrounding forest. The characters are equally well done, with designs that draw on both classic aesthetics and modern styling without going overboard. All in all, for fun farming cutscenes and a classic isekai harem plot, fans will not let Farm life in another world.

2 Noble farmer

MyAnimeList: 6.71

Hiromu Arakawa is a massive name in manga. Author created All Metal Alchemist, Raiden-18, Heroic Legend of Arslanand currently ongoing Daemons of the Shadow Realmso her legacy is set in stone by this point. However, Arakawa also deserves credit for basically carrying farming anime and mango on the back, providing two of the best views into the agricultural industry. Most people are probably familiar with her most famous farm-themed story, Silver spoonbut the 2011 manga was Arakawa's second attempt to delve into this area. The manga was created in 2006 Hyakushou Kizokuseries that continues to produce content today.

Some context is required. Arakawa worked on a farm and frames these experiences Hyakushou Kizoku and Silver spoon. While the latter follows a conventional fictional format (to an extent), the former is autobiographical and (more) educational, with each episode focusing on one aspect of farming (be it milk, vegetables or potatoes). Arakawa appears in each episode as an anthropomorphic cow, while also serving as a narrator to guide viewers through the more complex parts. Although not as fun as Silver spoon or even Farm life in another world, Hyakushou Kizoku delves much more into the farming process while still containing quite a bit of humor. Each episode is only about four minutes long, so the show never overstays its welcome.

Hyakushou Kizoku
season 2 is part of the fall 2024 anime season.

1 Silver spoon

MyAnimeList: 8.09 (Season 1)

A great anime with a bit of a cult following, Silver spoon explores themes of family expectations, feelings of inadequacy, and of course, farming! Protagonist Hachiken applies to an agricultural high school when his father demands perfection from him, with the expectation that once he graduates, he and the rest of the family will enter the world of business.

The thing is, Hachiken doesn't want to be in the business world. The high stakes and long hours don't appeal to him in the slightest, so he decides to choose the opposite of the business world: the farm life.

During the program, viewers can see a basic overview of industrial management in small towns. There are characters affected by growing season and scarcity, insights into how goods such as milk are collected, and lots of information about the life cycles of farm animals. While there is a small romantic element to the series, it is mostly about the life of a Japanese farm owner and Hachiken's personal growth. The pace is slower than typical shows, which combined with the art and music makes for a comfortable farming anime.
