MCU adaptation of Scarlet Witch
From the main hook to Marvel RivalsTradition focuses on the multiverse, the game is able to justify tweaking characters to be significantly different or more similar to the MCU or different versions of characters from the Marvel Comics universe. In the case of Scarlet Witch, Marvel Rivals It seems to lean more towards her original characterization in Marvel Comics, which presents some key differences from the MCU adaptation.
Because mutants have yet to be introduced into the MCU and Age of Ultron was released prior to Disney's acquisition of Fox, the MCU gave the Maximoff twins their powers through experimentation rather than birth. While this change was understandable for copyright reasons, it cannot be overstated how important Scarlet Witch's mutant identity is to Marvel Comics. Her influence on mutantkind left a drastic mark on comic book history and is still a major plot point in comics running to this day.
The Maximoff twins are also of Jewish-Roma origin. While Elizabeth Olsen initially gave Scarlet Witch an accent when portraying her Age of Ultronthis accent eventually disappeared. Olsen is also not of Jewish-Roma descent, which has led some fans to criticize her casting.
The MCU's portrayal of Vision and Scarlet Witch's romantic relationship is fairly accurate. WandaVision and Agatha all the time to continue this story by introducing their twin brothers, Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd. This story is also fairly comic accurate, with Wiccan being officially introduced Agatha all the time.
Adaptation of Scarlet Witch from Marvel Rivals
Scarlet Witch's Abilities v Marvel Rivals they are quite consistent with her powers in the MCU and Marvel Comics. Descriptions of her powers specifically mention “Chaos Magic”, which has been mentioned in both the MCU and comics alongside Scarlet Witch before. Scarlet Witch's “Reality Erasure” ability is also in line with these abilities as she is able to manipulate reality at will.
However, there are key differences between the MCU adaptation and Marvel Rivals'. And that Marvel Rivals took the opportunity to make Scarlet Witch more comically accurate. Marvel RivalsOne example is the Scarlet Witch design. Her skin and hair are darker, more in line with her appearance as a Jewish-Roma woman, and she has an accent. Players can see the difference between the design Marvel Rivals and MCU as a Multiverse of Madness skin exists for Scarlet Witch in the game.
Scarlet Witch is a mutant again
Magneto is the biological father of both Maximoff twins Marvel Rivals, as discussed through several voice lines between Magneto and Scarlet Witch. The characters also share a team.
Additionally, Scarlet Witch has a voiceover line that mentions “No more mutants”. This is also an achievement that Scarlet Witch players can unlock after defeating mutant enemies like her ten times. The quote “No more mutants” is a direct reference to the “House of M” storyline, in which the Scarlet Witch took away mutant powers from most mutants. This plot radically changed Marvel Comics. Of course, the MCU hasn't officially introduced mutants into its main timeline, so Wanda's legacy and this important storyline can't be adapted just yet.
Ultimately, most of the differences between Scarlet Witch in the MCU and Marvel Rivals are thanks to Marvel Comics. Scarlet Witch is a sign of that Marvel Rivals will likely turn to the comics in the future to draw inspiration from a roster of characters rather than primarily basing someone on their MCU counterparts.
