In an extreme and almost unheard of twist, a remake – yes, a remake – of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 is reportedly in development, even as the already announced remake of the first Knights of the Old Republic continues to experience development difficulties.
News of its existence comes via Stephen Totil and his Game File newsletter, where he reports that back in March, the fine folks at Disney and Lucasfilm Games were planning to remake the beloved sequel.
I started this nice thread, but let's not kid ourselves. The part people will be buzzing about the most is that Disney/Lucasfilm Games recently planned a full remake of KOTOR II in March Yes, that's 2 A, no, not a port…. a full remake. With Obsidian content trimmed back — Stephen Totilo (@stephentotilo.bsky.social) 2025-12-08T20:53:14.941Z
What's more, remember that cut content that wasn't in the original version? Yeah, it would fit in this version.
Does anyone really believe that Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake still exists?
I have a bad feeling about it.
Wait, how did we even get here?
In his latest issue, Totilo explores how the cut content that was originally proposed to be part of the KOTOR 2 Switch port was killed, and the circumstances surrounding a lawsuit filed by someone for “false advertising”, something that was considered new but ended up being an extremely valuable step in finding the future of KOTOR.
Checking the statements, Totilo noticed that there were several references to a project called “Juliet”, which was not the codename of the already released KOTOR 2 port. FYI, this port went under “Capulet.”
It was a KOTOR 2 remake, which, according to Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly, is “a project where we wanted to do a complete remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story and the characters and generally – the general content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and all these kinds of modern graphics.”
It was something we discussed with Aspyr.
Interestingly, Reilly was asked if any of the edited content would be part of this remake, to which he noted that if it's Star Wars-related, it will appear.
Specifically, Reilly was asked by the lawyer that if there was a planet in the cut content, would it also appear in the remake?
“That's the idea,” Reilly said.
It is important to note that this has been in place since March. It is now December and Totilo added that he was unable to confirm her condition.
Still, it's a pretty exciting development if true. Although one has to wonder what this means for the already-in-development and probably seriously troubled KOTOR 1 remake, and how much its up-in-the-air status is holding things back from moving forward. At the very least, it looks like there were or are plans to make a definitive copy of KOTOR 2 and that should be enough to get fans going.
