Square Enix Adds Fuel to Final Fantasy 9 Remake Rumor Fire
Square Enix is updating its official website to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9, and fans think it's a sign of big things to come.
Final Fantasy 9 is getting an anime adaptation
over the summer Final Fantasy 9 celebrated its 25th anniversary, first released in Japan on the original PlayStation console on July 7, 2000. Part of this celebration was the mention of an upcoming animated series based on the game, which was officially announced by Cyber Group Studios as early as 2021. However, plans for the series seemed tenuous long before the game's 25th anniversary, as the financial and solvent producer entered a financial and financial distributor in France. 2024, and a judge ordered its assets liquidated in April 2025, seemingly shelving the project before it had a chance to be released.
The reasons for including the animated series in the celebrations now seem a little clearer, thanks to a report from French television and film industry publication Ecran Total. According to this report, the series is back on track with a planned release in 2028, but will be completed under the wing of Euro Visual, a company best known for its work on French animated series for children. About 5 and the second and third seasons Bell bunnies. Like other major Euro Visual works, Final Fantasy 9 project will be a children's animated series aimed at the 6 to 13-year-old demographic, which is fitting considering the lighter, cartoonier tone of the ninth installment in the RPG series compared to the other games surrounding it in the timeline. The report also states that the series is planned for 13 episodes, each with a duration of 22 minutes, and will be presented in 2D format.
While the return of the animated series is good news for fans, it's probably not the announcement most of them wanted to hear. After success Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020, plenty of other classic games in the series were trashed by the community for the potential of getting a remake as well. Rumors and others Final Fantasy 9 remake has hinted over the past four years that it is an official Square Enix project, and these claims have been backed up by data mining efforts at Nvidia and information dumps from reputable leakers.
There's still no official confirmation from Square Enix that the classic 2000 RPG has a new version currently in development, and more recent rumors could spell bad news for the potential project, assuming it exists. In October, leaker Nate the Hate announced that he had nothing new to share about the project, provided that Final Fantasy 9 the remake has been shelved or otherwise “put on ice” with no word on if or when the software company will resume work on it. Nate the Hate's reliability as a leaker is a topic of debate in the gaming community, although he has been right about a few things in the past, including the release dates of Nintendo Switch 2 games and the content of several game demos.
