A PS5 owner transforms the console into a Linux machine capable of running GTA 5

As for the next major hardware release, Xbox recently confirmed its next-gen console plans and last week revealed Project Helix, a home console that will be able to play PC games. Elsewhere, Valve is still maintaining plans to release its Steam Machine sometime in 2026.

But gamers aren't exactly a patient bunch, and one PlayStation 5 user decided to turn his existing PS5 into a Steam Machine-like experience.

The end result, as first spotted by Push Square , is a Linux-capable PS5 that can play Grand Theft Auto 5 at 60fps with full ray tracing capabilities.

User Andy Nguyen shared that the console's 4K video output as well as audio and all USB ports are working as normal. According to Nguyen, the CPU runs at 3.2 GHz and the GPU at 2.0 GHz. It is possible to push the hardware limits further, up to 3.5 GHz for the CPU and 2.23 GHz for the GPU, but this would cause overheating.

PS5 Pro 1st Anniversary

It's been a whole year and the PS5 Pro still hasn't proven itself

Is the PS5 Pro worth buying now? Let's take a look and find out.

It's worth noting that this exploit also only runs on the PS5 Slim console. If it were on the much more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro, then it's likely we'd see even crazier results.

Unfortunately, the exploit requires a PS5 with an older firmware. That said, it's the next step to see what a modded PS5 can do. This development comes on the heels of PS5 ROM key leaks online, leaving more than 84 million consoles vulnerable to a full jailbreak in due course.

Either way, it's a good look at Steam Deck's potential

Part of what makes Nguyen's effort so fascinating is that it's a small glimpse of what the Steam Machine, a real Linux-based machine, can offer whenever it's released.

This part of the release is the biggest element holding things back, as now Valve would like to have a fixed price as well as a release date for their next available hardware. However, the current conditions in the global market, especially the lack of RAM and storage, have put the company on its heels.

Just two days ago, the company reconfirmed that it plans to release not only the Steam Machine in 2026, but also the Steam Frame, its foray into VR, as well as an updated Steam Controller.

“Further updates will be shared as we finalize our plans,” a blog on its website said. According to a PR rep, “nothing has really changed” on Valve's end, though seeing is believing and we've yet to receive any confirmation.

Whenever it comes out, expect some crazy configurations like the ones above.
