Horror games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space are scary in their own right and contain moments that will make you want to throw your controller against the wall as you run away screaming. Then came the advent of virtual reality (VR) and those horror games that were already hard to stomach started to inspire even more fear.
While not every horror title known to man has made the transition to VR, one fan is helping to ensure that one of the most iconic titles, the original Silent Hill on the PlayStation 1, gets its due.
Result? Silent Hill (1999) VR Edition, an upcoming release from VRified Games, a self-proclaimed “VR enthusiast who loves playing flat screen games in VR”.
In a nearly two-minute long video shared on YouTube, they emphasized that their project is not a “Fan Remake” or “Port,” but rather an experiment with the original title, making it fully playable in stereoscopic 3D from a first-person perspective with increased head tracking and modernized controls.
There's no release date for the project other than “soon,” and fans are encouraged to subscribe to their YouTube channel for the latest updates, which included a look at how it will perform in real life.
While Resident Evil has seen a modern VR treatment, Silent Hill and its renaissance have not. This seemingly prompted the creators to take matters into their own hands.
“Same thing, I literally waited years to go full throttle with Thanos and say, 'Fine, I'll do it myself,'” they wrote to someone in response.
Do we really need Silent Hill that much?
Too much of a good thing?
Either way, it looks like a horror game, and VR fans will have another title to add to the list. Guess what, it's not the only Silent Hill-related thing, official or unofficial, that's in the works.
Silent Hill fans are eating well and it doesn't sound like things are stopping anytime soon
To recap, Silent Hill 2 Remake was released in 2024, and while there was some initial concern, Bloober Team absolutely knocked it out of the park and helped bring the horror classic to modern hardware.
A year later, the first new Silent Hill project in years, Silent Hill f, was released to critical acclaim, meaning the Silent Hill games are on rotation. Meanwhile, Bloober Team was chosen to remake the original Silent Hill title and add a third game to the books.
Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamato recently shared his hope that the team could release a new SIlent Hill game every year as the franchise gets back on track. It's a bold claim, but who's to stop them with two hits to their name?
If all that wasn't enough, there's also the live-action Return to Silent Hill movie, which hits theaters later this month. It doesn't seem particularly incredible, but we're willing to give it a shot. The addition of a VR title is really just another cherry on top of what has been a full-fledged resurrection.
