Director Rust steps up to save a new world: Aeternum

Following the announcement revealing the exact shutdown date of January 31, 2027, Alistair McFarlane, director of Facepunch Studios, which developed the survival game Rustmade an offer to Amazon in an attempt to save the game. He sent a tweet to Amazon Games stating that he was offering the game for purchase for $25 million, with a follow-up tweet stating that “Games should never die”. Alistair has yet to say whether Amazon has responded in any way to the offer, so for now, New World: AeternumFate remains hanging in the balance.

In addition to the offer, McFarlane also suggested that instead of selling the game, Amazon should consider giving control over the title to players by allowing public servers. He said that “the game will live forever in the hands of a dedicated community,” pointing to his own development studio and the way he does things. A number of players and fans chimed in with their own hopes that the game can somehow be saved, expressing their frustration with the situation and sharing their hesitancy about when to play Amazon's next game for fear of a repeat.

Shutting down games is controversial

With the recent trend of layoffs and development of game studios being completely removed, a number of games have recently been shut down or canceled. For example, there was an uproar when it was announced MultiVersus would shut down just a year after its full release, not only unplugging the game entirely, but also removing it so new players can't try it at all. While it's clearly not financially viable for the company to forever host servers for a dead game, players have often requested the ability to play their favorite games on private servers or offline where possible.

Unfortunately, some games never got a chance to appeal to gamers in recent years, with upcoming titles like EA Black Panther the game is an ax Perfect darkness Reboot is scrapped or Riot Games killing Hytal after spending ten years in development. In most cases, nothing can be done about it, but McFarlane has a chance to save New World: Aeternum may not be as far-fetched as it seems. In case Hytalthe developers successfully acquired the rights to the game from Riot Games and have since released it Hytal to early access.

New World: Aeternum it's also not the only game that has recently seen developers trying to save it from being shut down completely. A former BioWare executive proposed a rescue plan Anthem converting it to a single-player RPG, which they estimate would cost $10 million. It is unknown at this time if there are any rescue efforts New world or Anthem will be successful, but the players remain hopeful.
