Amazon games could not beat Steam because “underestimated” the platform

Summary

  • Amazon failed to disrupt Steam despite acquisitions and a new service streaming service.

  • The underestimation of user habits and existing solutions has led to Amazon's failure.

  • Success of Steam as a business, social network, library and the case of trophy caused it to be unsurpassed.

Amazon's pressure into the games was largely unsuccessful. The platform certainly distributes a lot of great games for free every month, but its efforts with streaming Luna were mostly futile and its purchase Twitch did not even move the dial.

Now, in a new post on LinkedIn, former Vice President Prime Gaming on Amazon, Ethan Evans, shares what the company's overall goal and why eventually failed.

“We underestimated what made consumers use steam”

Evans shared that the Amazon's final plan was to “disrupt the Steam Gaming Platform” and added that his company was at least 250 times larger and “tried everything”.

Former Vice President revealed that Amazon had three -point access to the online video game market: obtaining reflexive entertainment games and expanding, buying Twitch and creating another interpretation and development of Luna, Amazon's streaming games and Google Stadia competitor. Evans shares it, despite this: “Steam dominated all the time, although she was a relatively small society.”

We underestimated what made consumers use Steam.

Evans eventually thinks that “the mistake was that we underestimated what made consumers use Steam. It was a trade, a social network, a library and a case of a trophy in one. And it worked well.

“We assumed that size and visibility would be enough to attract customers, but we underestimated the power of existing user habits. We have never verified our basic prerequisites than we have invested significantly in the solution. The truth is that players already had a solution to their problems and were not switching platforms just because it was new.

It's a sincere confession, but it's not surprising. Steam is and has always been a premium online video game game, with Epic Games Store and GOG fills any gaps in the gaps. Amazon sipped from the poisoned chalice if he thought he could ever take them off.
