Don’t worry if you’ve run out, however — it’s an abundant resource that can be found as early as on one of the first planets you visit. This guide will teach you exactly where to hunt down this vital resource; whether you’re looking to gather it by hand, or pay someone else to harvest it for you.

Where To Gather Fiber

One of the most cost-effective ways of obtaining fiber is to harvest it yourself.

You can do this by finding a planet with dense plantlife — thankfully, you’ll find one very early on in the game: Jemison of Alpha Centauri, which houses New Atlantis, the first city you’ll visit during the main storyline.

If you haven’t already, this is also a great chance to explore and survey your first planet. You’ll want to follow these steps to land somewhere fiber-rich:

  • While looking at the planet in your starmap or in the pilot seat, locate a Forest area.
  • Set a landing target (Mouse1 / A) on said Forest area.
  • Travel to your landing target (X).

Once you’ve landed, the two plants you want to locate are Boreas Root and Glossy Stickweed for maximum fiber output.

Glossy Stickweed is a short, stout little plant that looks like a tree trunk or cactus:

While Boreas Root is a large, curling leafy plant:

Remember that you can whip out your hand scanner (F / LB) for an easier time searching. Plus, you’ll get some experience and rewards for surveying a planet properly with your scanner.

Where To Buy Fiber

That said, if you’ve got a ton of credits burning a hole in your inventory, there’s no quicker and easier way of obtaining fiber than by hiring other people to do the heavy lifting for you.

You’ll be able to find a merchant selling fiber on Mars — again, early on during the course of the main storyline.

  • Travel to the Cydonia Mining Exchange on Mars, and enter the outpost.
  • From there, go down the hallway and down a ramp.
  • Open the door to your right to find a Trade Authority vendor, who will be happy to sell you fiber at four credits each.

If the vendors don’t have enough fiber for your crafting needs, note that their inventories will be restocked if you sleep for eight hours.
