In video games, a beautiful environment helps elevate playtime from a fun distraction to an engaging experience. And no environment catches a player’s attention more than an island. An island not only helps to contain a game to a certain area but also provides fun quests and breathtaking eye candy for you to enjoy.

Over the years, there have been many islands featured in games. Most have been getaway locations, but some also lean more towards residential than tropical respite. But what all video game islands share is a promise of a good time and an interesting story.

10 Tatsumi Port Island

Paulownia Mall from Persona 3 Reload

While Tatsumi Port Island might be an unusual island choice, it is still technically an island. During the events of Persona 3, you’ll find yourself going to school by day and battling deadly creatures at night. Or at least during the Dark Hour.

As Persona 3’s main location, there’s much to do on Tatsumi Port Island and its surrounding town. You can hang out with friends, go shopping, watch a movie, eat a beef bowl, and even sneak into a dance club. Just try not to overexert yourself. After all, a tired Persona user is an easy target for Shadows.

9 The Sims 4 Island Living

Sulani from The Sims 4 Island Living Expansion Pack

Released as an Expansion pack for the Sims 4, The Sims Island Living invites you to explore, relax, and live in the picturesque land of Sulani. Here, your Sim will get to have the full tropical island experience.

From taking a dip in the sea to keeping the beaches clean to even meeting a mermaid, Sims living the island dream life can do it all. However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows here. If you choose to live on Mua Pel’am, for example, you’ll have to watch out for falling, flaming rocks. Talk about trouble in paradise!

8 Windfall island

Although Outset Island is where you begin The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Windfall Island is where your adventure truly starts. No longer restricted by an unfriendly pirate ship and the lack of a sword, Windfall Island is where you are finally granted the freedom to explore, well, freely.

Throughout your journey, you’ll find yourself returning to this cheerful community to take on quests, stock up on items, and chat with the locals. And you’ll definitely be chatting with many locals if you choose to one hundred percent the game.

7 Destiny Islands

Sora, Riku, and Kairi Running on Destiny Islands from Kingdom Hearts Series

Even though you don’t get to spend too much time on Destiny Islands, it’s clear that this tropical paradise has a soft spot in Sora’s heart. This island might not seem like much on the surface, but it’s where Kingdom Hearts starts and where many of its sequels end.

Destiny Islands is filled with sandy beaches, lush green trees, jungle gym-like jumping platforms, a cave filled with hand-drawn memories, and heartful Paopu fruits. As long as darkness doesn’t consume the entire island, Destiny Islands is the perfect place to go when you want to get away from it all.

6 Pi’illo Island

Wakeport from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

An island where you can take a nap and dream the day away? That sure sounds like paradise. It initially is one in Mario and Luigi: Dream Team before the villains come and ruin it. But evil dark forces (and Bowser) aside, there are still plenty of things to do on Pi’illo Island.

You can enjoy the hustle and bustle of Wakeport, visit the towering and historic Pi’illo Castle, or even trek up Mount Pajamaja., all while defeating baddies and searching for Princess Peach. If you get too tired exploring these locations, don’t worry; you can always take a nap and continue your tour of this dreamy world in the Dream World.

5 Lental Region

Lental Region From New Pokemon Snap

In the New Pokemon Snap game (“New” as in released in 2021), your main objective is to take pictures of Pokemon. Yup, no battling or catching here. All you have to do is ride the Neo-One car, stock up on Fluffruit, and practice your Illumina orb tossing skills. Oh, and take cute snaps of Pokemon, too.

Luckily, taking those impressive pics is easy to do in the Lental region. In this battle-free land, there’s not one, not two, but four islands to explore. Plus, there are a bunch of smaller islands too. A quick word of advice for any newbie photographers: make sure to bring your winter coat when you visit Durice Island, otherwise, you’ll get more frozen than a Froslass.

4 The Island From The Witness

scenery of the island in The Witness

The Witness is a fascinating game about solving seemingly never-endings puzzles while exploring a beautiful and abandoned island. Although you won’t find any intense action gameplay or climatic storytelling in this game, The Witness does provide you with calming music, mind-boggling brain-teasers, and a colorful world to relax in.

On this enchanting isle you’ll find deserts, forests, marshes, and even an entire area dedicated to a tree house. But you won’t find people. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon a recording or two but besides that, no one will bother you if you choose to escape to this lonely island.

3 Inkwell Isle Four

Inkwell Isle Four from Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

As downloadable content to Cuphead, these purchasable add-ons range from a few extra outfits to an entire stand-alone bonus game that challenges its players to brand-new adventures. Inkwell Isle Four from Cuphead is the latter.

Filled with more painstaking, headache-inducing, rage-quitting gameplay that you’ll love, this island sees the return of Cuphead and Mugman as they try to gather ingredients to help revive Ms. Chalice. But don’t go thinking that Chalice is going to sit back while the brothers do all the work. Nope, in this DLC, you can switch between all three of the characters as you take on new, challenging, and annoying bosses.

2 Isle Delfino

Mario under Peach's parasol in Super Mario Sunshine

Ah Isle Delfino; if it weren’t for the icky vibrant goo covering the island, it would have been the perfect spot for Mario and Peach (and Toadsworth) to vacation in. Alas, in Super Mario Sunshine, the isle is completely covered in graffiti goop and needs to be cleaned.

At least while you’re power-washing your enemies down and sanitizing attractions, you can take in the Isle’s hottest hot spots. Be sure to check out the many sandy beaches, the amusement park, and the resort while you’re cleaning up.

1 Wuhu Island

Mii Flying Over Wuhu Island from Pilotwings Resort

So then, which island is the best of the best? Well, that’s obvious, it’s Wuhu Island. Interesting name aside, this island is Nintendo’s magnum opus of tropical isles. Initially appearing in the fitness game Wii Fit, Wuhu Island has since become a destination for Super Smash brawlers, Mario Kart racers, and, of course, Miis.

Games like the aforementioned Wii Fit and the 3DS’ Pilotwings Resort allowed you to explore this landmark by foot and by air. Games like Wii Sports Resort and Mario Kart let you enjoy more competitive activities the isle has to offer. It’s clear that Nintendo put a lot of love into Wuhu Island and elevated it from a simple backdrop to a go-to destination.
