A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a police van before crashing it in Brisbane’s north.
Officers initially confronted the 37-year-old after hearing reports he was armed with a knife on Boundary Rd in Narangba about 3.20am on Tuesday.
Police say the man was able to evade the officers before allegedly jumping behind the wheel of the police van and driving off.
“The man has subsequently crashed the police vehicle on Anzac Ave at Mango Hill,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
The van ploughed into a tree near the Mango Hill Tavern, with the driver nearly making his way to McDonalds before the crash occurred.
The police van was left crumpled at the scene and the man was lucky to escape with non-life-threatening injuries.
Despite the crash, the man then allegedly attempted to flee on foot and was chased by officers before being arrested.
He was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment.
He remains under police guard in hospital.
