Is Queensland jinxed? What were the odds the Sunshine state would lose five finals in 2023?

2023 was a tough season for the banana benders. Queensland sport took a beating as, despite winning State of Origin, the Sunshine State lost five major sporting Grand Finals.

So is Queensland jinxed? What were the odds they’d lose ALL five finals? Read on for the probability, odds, breakdown and analysis of the Queensland based sporting teams losing five finals this year.

IS QUEENSLAND JINXED?

Miraculously five Queensland-based sports sides lost the Grand Final of their respective sports in 2023.

From the Heat to the Lions, the Broncos to the Roar and even the NRLW’s TItans, it’s well worth delving into the odds and chances of how that all happened.

Other than Queensland‘s NRL State of Origin victory, it hasn’t been a fun year to be a sports fanatic in the Sunshine State.

The odds suggest they have been extremely unlucky to lose all five finals this year alone, with punters and fans filthy with the results.

QUEENSLAND’S FINAL RESULTS & ODDS

BBL FINAL

5/178 – Perth Scorchers: $1.35

7/175 – Brisbane Heat: $3.15

AFL GRAND FINAL

90 – Collingwood Magpies: $1.75

86 – Brisbane Lions: $2.25

NRL GRAND FINAL

26 – Penrith Panthers: $1.65

24 – Brisbane Broncos: $2.52

NRLW GRAND FINAL

24 – Newcastle Knights: $1.50

18 – Gold Coast Titans: $2.55

FFA CUP FINAL

3 – Sydney FC: $1.94

Draw: $3.90

1 – Brisbane Roar: $4.34

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

It is worth noting that many of these Queenslande sides were excellent throughout their seasons, but somehow managed to choke away some strong leads and got punters hopes up early in their final matches.

The Roar were up 1-0 until the 72nd minute in the FFA Cup against Sydney FC.

The Broncos memorably crumbled in the NRL Grand Final after having a 15 point lead over the Panthers, while the Heat had to hold on but couldn’t in the final over of the BBL.

There are also no doubt Lions fans still screaming about the play-on call that Zac Bailey did or didn’t hear.

ODDS PROBABILITY

Heading into each final game, according to the odds, the probability of a Queensland loss was placed at:

  • BBL – Perth win @ $1.35 = 74%
  • NRLW – Newcastle win @ $1.50 = 67%
  • NRL – Penrith win @ $1.65 = 61%
  • AFL – Collingwood win @ $1.75 = 57%
  • FFA CUP – Sydney win @ $1.94 = 52%

In terms of percentages derived from each game’s odds, the average percentage for the non-Queenland sides winning was 61% and all sides bar Sydney FC had a chance above 57%.

Amazingly, all of the Queensland sides were underdogs.

But the difference in the chances for all favourites winning is still quite small.

If punters were to bet on all the favourites in these matches you would produce great odds, especially in the format of a multi.

MULTI

  • Collingwood H2H
  • Penrith H2H
  • Newcastle H2H
  • Perth H2H
  • Sydney H2H

FIVE-LEGS @ $11.34

Displaying all these sides winning in a multi (as shown above) gets the price to $11.34, meaning the implied probability of all these non Queensland sides winning their finals is a crazily low 8.82%.

To turn that around: the odds suggested there was a 91.18% chance that Queensland would avoid the sweep.

The fact that none of the Brisbane or Gold Coast teams were able to cause one upset win in their ultimate game of their team’s season is shocking.

Is there something in the water up north? Does Queensland have a state-wide jinx?

Or would most Queenslanders happily trade continued State of Origin dominance with losing Grand Finals in other codes?

Either way, it might be worth staying away from Queensland teams in future sports finals.
