Man falls from car on Pacific Motorway at Chinderah, hit by car and dies

A man has died after falling from a Mercedes-Benz car on a major highway and then being hit by another vehicle.

The incident happened on the Pacific Highway near Chinderah on the NSW far north coast on Wednesday night.

Citizens tried to help, but he died at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the motorway near the Tweed Valley Way exit at Chinderah at around 6.30pm.

A man in his 20s reportedly fell from the Mercedes onto the roadway before being hit by a passing motorcyclist, a police spokesman said.

The 27-year-old driver of the Mercedes was arrested, taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and breathalysed, which showed a reading of 0.074, above the 0.05 limit for drivers.

The driver was issued with a drink driving offense notice and was taken to Tweed Valley Hospital for a mandatory check-up.

The police’s accident investigation unit is investigating the incident and police have asked any witnesses or drivers who have dash cam footage to come forward.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.
