‘Inner West’ rapist finally jailed after 20yrs

A serial rapist who preyed on women in Sydney in 2000 has finally been jailed after nearly 20 years.

Darren Kennedy, 54, was convicted of five counts of sexual intercourse without consent, as well as multiple counts of indecent assault, battery, aggravated home invasion and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was jailed for 17 years and four months on Friday for the horrific sexual assaults involving four unrelated women in the suburbs of Croydon, Bondi, Bexley and Marrickville in late 2003 and 2004. The Daily Telegraph reported.

He was also found guilty of possessing and distributing child abuse material.

In one terrifying attack, one woman woke up to find Kennedy in her bedroom hiding behind a pillow while shining a torch in her face.

He forced her to have oral sex with him.

Another woman was attacked on a road near Bondi Beach. Kennedy told her to “shut up” before forcing her to perform oral sex with him.

The third victim was attacked in her own garden while preparing to travel to her son’s wedding.

Kennedy told the victim it would be their secret and said he didn’t want to ruin her son’s wedding.

The fourth victim, a Year 12 student, woke up to find him in her bedroom stroking her cheek.

NSW Police are desperate to catch an Inner West rapist but he has eluded police for more than 15 years.

The police even consulted with the FBI and investigated 3,000 people of interest.

After advances in family DNA technology, there was eventually a breakthrough in the case.

Police were able to identify a distant relative of Kennedy’s who was in a police database linked to DNA found at four crime scenes.

Kennedy was arrested in November 2021 in Panania.

At the Downing Center District Court on Friday, Judge Jennie Girdham SC described Kennedy’s actions as “cruel” and “inhumane”.

“His behavior was extremely callous, it was degrading and it was repetitive,” she said.
