Iraqi PM welcomes UNSC decision to end mandate and tasks of UN assistance mission

NEW YORK: The UN Security Council unanimously decided on Friday that the United Nations political mission in Iraq will leave the country at the end of 2025 after more than 20 years, at the request of Baghdad. Earlier this month, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani called for the closure of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in a letter to the council. Al-Sudani said UNAMI had overcome “great and varied challenges” and that “the foundations for a political mission in Iraq” no longer existed.
