NRL 2024: Eels coach Trent Barrett delivers hilarious dig at Shaun Lane

Eels interim coach Trent Barrett and captain Clint Gutherson set out to find striker Shaun Lane after the club’s much-needed win over Cronulla.

In recent weeks, Lane has changed his role, coming off the bench and playing as a center forward.

He had one of his better games of the season against the Sharks in limited action, running for 65 yards and recording two sacks and two sacks in 26 minutes on the floor.

When asked by a reporter to comment on Lane’s performance, Barrett offered a rather unusual compliment that drew laughter from Gutherson.

“When we can get 80 minutes from (back-rowers) Kelma (Tuilagi) and Carty (Bryce Cartwright), it frees us up to do some things with our bench,” Barrett said.

“And just with Laney, he takes all his mind off him by throwing him up the middle. He’s a big body and that’s how he can help us.”

Fox League’s Lara Pitt then asked, “Why is that funny?”

“No comment,” Gutherson replied.

“Very intelligent man Laney,” Barrett said with a laugh just as the press conference ended.

At the start of the press conference, Barrett and Gutherson noted the importance of Mitch Moses in the lineup.

Moses played his first game in more than two months after missing time with a broken leg.

The half-back had three try assists in the resumption, while Gutherson was also successful (245m) in his return from a knee injury.

“I think (Mitch and Clint) give everybody else confidence and their talk,” Barrett said.

“You could notice it in the warm-up, but in training we noticed that there is a noticeable difference.

“That’s why (Gutherson) is captain and that’s why Mitch is half-back and that’s what they bring.

The introduction of the star Moses raises Blues' question

“We just miss his kicking game and his direction, he’s a dominant personality and that’s why he’s a half-back and that’s what we’ve been missing and he was excellent tonight.

“He’s so important to us.”

“He’s our halfback for a reason,” Gutherson said.

“He’s probably one of the best halfbacks in the league right now. If you miss it, it’s a big loss. The confidence he brings to the team and to everyone at the club when he plays is a big thing.

“It’s a credit to him to go out there and support the team who are first after a 12-week break.”
