England cricketer Brydon Carse banned for placing 303 bets on cricket matches

England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been banned for three months for placing 303 bets on cricket matches.

Carse is one of the men England are hoping to take over from Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad – but his dreams of a Test debut this summer have been dashed, according to The Sun.

The South African-born Durham speedster has played 14 ODIs and three T20s for England.

It is understood Carse did not play in any of the matches he bet on between 2017 and 2019. The ECB says he will retain his two-year contract with England.

“Even though these bets were a few years ago, this is no excuse and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Carse, 28, said.

“I would like to thank the ECB, Durham Cricket and the PCA for their support during this difficult time for me.

“I will be working hard over the next 12 weeks to repay that support on the pitch when I can get back to playing.”

Carse was banned from all cricket for three months and suspended for a further 13 months following an investigation by the Cricket Regulator.

With Test hopefuls Josh Tongue, Sam Cook and Saqib Mahmood currently injured, Carse’s absence presents further problems as England look to create a new-look Test attack.

An ECB spokesman said: “We take these matters very seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption violations in cricket.

“We support the decision of the cricket regulator and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon’s case.

“He cooperated and showed remorse for his actions. We are pleased that Brydon has shown growth and demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities in the five years since this breach.

“We hope his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers.”
