‘Is this satire?’: Aussie fashion trend Americans have just discovered

The American influencer has sent her Australian followers into a tailspin after describing the essential wardrobe staple as “chic”.

In a TikTok clip that has been viewed nearly 200,000 times, Californian Lauren Maile waxed lyrical about the benefits of Havaiana’s modest thong, going so far as to call it the “ultimate summer hack.”

Note that this shoe was historically intended for taking out the trash or avoiding getting tinea on the floor of a public shower.

“You’ve got to listen for a second… All you need all summer long is a pair of Havaianas—and let me tell you the reason why,” Ms. Maile began.

An Aussie fashion trend that Americans just discovered

“Lemme puts them on real quick, just to show you how cute they are.

“So, first of all, they’re very affordable. They literally range from $15 to $35 depending on the style you’re going for… So, very affordable, number one, which is like the number one thing.

“Number two: They literally go along every single outfit no matter where you’re headed—especially if you get a solid pair. They’re very chic, so you can honestly wear them to dinner – like, I’m just going to dinner and I’m wearing my Havaianas.

“Going to the beach? Havaianas. If you’re going to the farmer’s market and you’re wearing a cute little (pair of) baggy Levi’s (jeans), they look so cute with a pair of Havaianas.

“So, I’m trying to save you here, help out girl, Havaianas are your go-to for the summer.”

Needless to say, Ms Maile’s statement sent shockwaves through her viewers – with one asking if they had “woke up in an alternate reality”.

“As an Aussie I cried because you called Havaianas ‘chic’,” another person commented.

“Like Aussi….is that satire?” asked a third.

“Many places in Australia wouldn’t let you out to dinner if you’re wearing a pair of Havaianas,” pointed out another.

“These are an Aussie staple,” one person wrote.

“‘They literally go with every outfit’ (says) every bogan in the last 30 years (I’m a bogan),” joked another.

Havaianas’ welcome to the fashion world has been on the horizon for some time now, with Jennifer Lawrence, Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski wearing them in glamorous locations that belies the shoe’s humble origins.

In a piece for Vogue last year, Daniel Rodgers wrote that Havaiana “simultaneously evokes freedom (the flip flop is not so much a shoe as the absence of restrictions) and an exotic note of hedonism”.

“This is a shoe for people who want to feel the wind between their toes and live a life unfettered by oppressive straps, buckles and laces,” said Rodgers.

“Hitting the pavement in a thong sandal that makes the soles of your feet resemble those of a Victorian street urchin might represent the ultimate luxury: laziness.”
