‘F**king hilarious’: Brad Fittler roasted over Reece Robson commentary call

Even in the commentary box, Brad Fittler is not safe from the fans.

For the first time in six years, the former NSW coach, who left at the end of last season after being offered a one-year deal and a pay cut to stay in the role, was in the commentary box for an Origin match on Channel 9.

But one of his most controversial decisions came back to bite him after being rejected on commentary.

After Joseph Sua’ali’i was sensationally sent off just seven minutes into the opening game of the series, which the Maroons ended up winning 38-10, NSW were badly exposed on the right, which the 20-year-old would defend.

After conceding twice to cut the score to 20-6, Fittler said there appeared to be confusion in the Blues ranks as they worked to determine their roles in the 12-man back line.

“What they’re not doing is not making something permanent,” Fittler said. “They have to be able to find some synchronicity with each other.

“Reece Robson is there at the moment. It makes more sense, a little more speed. Let’s go, make their attacks and they will be right.”

Having said that, Queensland kicked the ball out about 35m from the NSW line.

But the fans quickly found out and attacked Fittler for a decision he made as manager in the second game last year.

In that game, Robson made his debut with Damien Cook coming off the bench.

Unfortunately, a chest injury to Tom Trbojevic in the early innings saw Fittler push Cook into an unfamiliar central position.

At the time, the decision was described as “completely unfair”, while Fittler was hit with a wave of criticism over the call.

And shoe lovers have proven that they have a long memory.

One fan tweeted: “Damn funny Freddy is among the comments calling for Reece Robson to move to midfield!”

Another added: “At least if Freddy was coaching NSW he’d put Reece Robson in the middle.”

A third joked: “It’s not too late for Damian Cook to run out of the crowd and play full-back…”

Plenty of others tried the same joke: “If only Damien Cook was available to play right centre.”

Robson only briefly played the role as the Blues appeared to stem the flow of bleeding down the flank.

He ended up racking up a game-high 50 tackles and while his attacking output appeared to have diminished with just five runs for 40 metres, the Cowboys ruck earned praise from Blues fans.

One of the tackles was a try in the second half when he made a last-ditch effort to stop Jeremiah Nanai from scoring a certain try.

Reece Robson trial saver stuns

Fox Sports’ Niko Pajarillo commented: “Reece Robson was brilliant tonight. So hard. Whore from NSW for the next 5 years.”

Another fan wrote: “Reece Robson must be our MotM.”

Another added: “Robson absolutely massive on a beaten side.”

Current NSW coach Michael Maguire said it was difficult for the Blues to come to terms after the side was rocked by an early bombshell.
