National War Memorial in Canberra vandalised with pro-Palestine graffiti

Police are investigating after a man spray-painted pro-Palestinian graffiti on the Australian War Memorial in Canberra overnight.

Police say the man painted three areas of the Canberra memorial with pro-Palestinian slogans at around 1am on Friday.

CCTV shows him wearing a black jacket, face covering and khaki pants with dark patches on the knees.

Acting Inspector Lisa Broomhall said criminal damage would not be tolerated at the national institution.

“The police are very disappointed this morning to see a national institution that holds special meaning for many vandalized,” she said.

“We want to remind the community that peaceful protests are part of a healthy democracy, but criminal acts will not be tolerated.

“The police will investigate this matter thoroughly to ensure that those involved are brought to justice.”

Memorials to Australia’s war effort and figures from the colonial era have been the subject of pro-Palestinian activity since the beginning of the Gaza War.

Earlier this week, police were called to a statue of King George V in Melbourne after it was decapitated and covered in red paint.

Canberra’s Vietnam War Memorial was previously spray-painted red with pro-Palestinian messages such as “All eyes on Rafa”.
