Arab League welcomes Armenia’s recognition of Palestinian state

CAIRO: The Arab League has welcomed the recognition of the State of Palestine by Armenia.

On Friday, Armenia announced it was the latest country to recognize Palestine as a state.

As Israel continued its assault on Gaza, several countries recognized the state of Palestine, drawing sharp criticism from Israeli officials.

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed Armenia’s announcement.

It is a brave decision that reflects the position of this friendly country on the right side of history, he said.

Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s spokesman, said the growing recognition of a Palestinian state reflected the growing conviction of the international community that continued occupation was not feasible and the need to implement a two-state solution.

Roshdy said the recognition represents an essential step towards the establishment of a Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders.

Roshdy quoted the Secretary-General and called on all countries to recognize the state of Palestine as soon as possible. The call also represents the embodiment of a two-state solution and a real contribution to achieving peace and ending the occupation,

On Friday, Egypt welcomed Armenia’s announcement.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt welcomed Armenia’s decision as a supportive step towards realizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to end the Israeli occupation and establish their own independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Egypt appreciated Armenia’s support to the Palestinian cause and called for continued efforts by all sides of the international community to create a political horizon that will allow the revival of a genuine peace process that addresses the roots and causes of the Palestinian issue and restores the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, especially their right to establish independent countries.

He called on influential international parties to assume their moral and historical responsibility towards the Palestinian people, to intervene to preserve their rights in this time of humanitarian crisis, to work to stop the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and to recognize the State of Palestine as an essential step towards a just solution to the Palestinian issue .
