Updated on June 9, 2023, by Dennis Moiseyev: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign comes with solid character dialogue that remains as memorable as the action-packed missions and set pieces. There are many quotes to select from throughout the story, so a few more worth mentioning have now been added.

15 “I Want Hassan Boxed Up And Gift-Wrapped.” – General Shepherd

Modern Warfare 2 began its campaign with a literal bang in which a missile launch blew up Iranian General Ghorbrani and his men during an arms deal. This action leaves Hassan Zyani wanting revenge against the United States, and the first mission has you discover that Zyani has somehow gotten ahold of ballistic missiles.

When getting this confirmation, General Shepherd asks everyone to step out of the conference room except for Kate Laswell. She pinpoints that Amsterdam may be the country of origin Hassan is smuggling the rockets through, and you can sense the urgency in Shepherd’s voice and his charming way of speaking when he delivers this response to Laswell.

14 “Welcome To The ‘City Of Souls.’ ” – Alejandro

Screenshot of Alejandro greeting Ghost and Soap from their plane that landed in Las Almas.

During the Amsterdam missions, the team learns that Hassan is receiving aid from the cartel to hide him and move his missiles. Therefore, Soap and Ghost join forces with Laswell’s contact, Alejandro, who leads the Los Vaqueros squad at the start of the “Cartel Protection” mission.

Alejandro says this quote in greeting Soap and Ghost from their plane as the duo arrives in the fictional region of Las Almas in Mexico. Las Almas is a seemingly beautiful city name that translates to ‘souls’ but is overshadowed by an eeriness because you later see the streets filled with bodies claimed by the cartel that runs it.

13 “Keep Your Blood In. You’ll Need Every Drop.” – Ghost

This quote from the “Alone” mission showcases the humor and playfully snarky attitude that defines Ghost. Soap and his team just got betrayed by Shadow Company head Philip Graves who took Alejandro and the rest of his men prisoner and shot Soap in the shoulder.

This dialogue line will trigger during the exchange where Ghost asks if you’re injured. You can choose from one of three dialogue options, but Ghost will always use this same clever dry response for Soap. Even when things have gotten bad, he still finds a way to make light of the situation and be there for his partner.

12 “Kids, Guns, And Balloons… That’s A New One.” – Soap

Screenshot of a boy receiving a balloon from Las Almas cartel members in COD Modern Warfare 2.

This quote is likewise said in the “Cartel Protection” mission while Ghost and Soap are inbound along the streets of Los Almas with Alejandro. Soap observes the environment around them and remarks this to Ghost when he witnesses armed cartel soldiers near a small child handing him a balloon.

To Soap, it’s a shocking sight to take in since he’s never visited such a region where this is the norm. However, Alejandro and his partner Rodolfo explain that it’s typical of the cartel to display such generosity to others to sway the public of their image, and their primary targets are usually children.

11 “Terrorism Is Good For Business. It’s Insurance.” – Valeria

Screenshot of Valeria being interrogated by Graves, Alejandro, and company in COD Modern Warfare 2.

Valeria is a new character introduced in Modern Warfare 2, and her brief appearance in the campaign is full of memorable quotes, particularly this one. She’s a former special forces member turned cartel leader who gets captured by Graves and company in the “El Sin Nombre” mission.

Valeria has a rocky past with Alejandro, for they served together before she went rogue, and it comes through in her interrogation scene. The outrageous quote that terrorism is good for her cartel business comes after Ghost refers to her as a “narco, harboring a terrorist,” and Alejandro fumes at her. Valeria elaborates that terrorism will keep the heat off drug trafficking.

10 “Oh, I Didn’t Count Them. I Have People For That.” – Valeria

Ghost, Gaz, and Price surrounding Valeria and interrogating her a second time on whether she knew about Hassan's third missile.

During her first interrogation, Valeria failed to mention that a third missile was headed for Chicago. When pressed about it later, this is her hilarious and sarcastic reasoning behind the omission. She claims she has people for such a task and that taking inventory is not her responsibility, but an extra rocket sure seems like it would be pretty noticeable.

She, of course, knew there were three missiles the entire time but cleverly didn’t mention it the first time, as it wasn’t the information she needed to give. “I have people for that” is a classic line perfect for these scenarios, and Valeria utilizes it effectively and in a way that adds to her characterization.

9 “He’s Not New.” – Captain Price

Screenshot of Price and Kate toasting to

In the epilogue scene, Price’s squad and Kate are having well-earned drinks at a bar, having stopped Hassan and prevented his missile from reaching Washington, D.C. They discuss that Shepherd remains in the wind and Russians may be their current problem, so Price makes a toast to “cutting the heads off snakes.”

Kate then pulls out a photo of who she claims is a ‘new’ person of interest in bed with the Russians, but Price’s expression and dialogue demonstrate otherwise. He absolutely knows who’s in the picture and reveals his name as Makarov, the secondary antagonist in the original Modern Warfare 2 game and the main one in MW3. It’s a nice tease of what’s to come in the next entry.

8 “Then I’ll Speak Your Bastardized Medieval English Because You Are All Uneducated Street Dogs.” – Hassan

Screenshot of Hassan captured and on his knees surrounded by the main characters in COD Modern Warfare 2.

This loaded line of dialogue comes from Hassan Zayani when captured as a result of the coordinated effort of Task Force 141, Alejandro, and air support from Shadow Company. It expresses his pure animosity toward the Americans for what they did to the head of Iran’s Quds Force.

When brought to his knees, Hassan asks Graves if he can speak either Arabic or Farsi, to which Graves answers no to both. Hassan seizes the opportunity to share his disgust of the English language and his superiority complex over the West. “Uneducated street dogs” is an incredibly harsh insult, to say the least.

7 “To Do Good You Gotta Do Some Bad.” – General Shepherd

Shepherd turning his back away from Price and facing the glass window of his office, with the reflection of lights and the city skyline and Price on the laptop screen in the background.

General Shepherd is up there with some of the best villains created in an FPS game, and his villain speech to Captain Price over a video call is filled with some great quotes. There’s one about him not being held down by “a roll of red tape” and Graves being like “a dog with a bone” and telling the 141 members not to “try and take it.”

And then there’s this one right here spoken like a true megalomaniac. Shepherd believes his evil actions and betrayal of Task Force 141 are all for the greater good and that there can never be any good without the bad coming first.

6 “CIA Shit.” – Gaz And Captain Price

Screenshot of Gaz walking alongside Kate in an Amsterdam alley where she hands him the syringe in COD Modern Warfare 2.

A more simple yet profane quote that surely won’t leave your mind. This phrase is uttered by Gaz during the Amsterdam “Tradecraft” mission and then reiterated by Captain Price in the final cutscene. It’s a funny one-liner jab directed at the gadgets the CIA has at its disposal and the strings it can pull.

Kate Laswell has a high rank within the CIA and supplies Gaz with a non-lethal syringe to incapacitate cartel guards in a public setting. This tool is what causes Gaz to quip such a line. Price hears this through comms and later says it back to Kate as they watch the news coverage covering up the explosion in Chicago.

5 “Be Careful Who You Trust, Sergeant. People You Know Can Hurt You The Most.” – Ghost

Screenshot of Ghost reunited with Soap in a truck at the end of the

Ghost is naturally always one for sarcastic banter that breaks the ice between him and Soap and is never known to get this deep by giving a quote like that, but dire circumstances elicit a change. This dialogue occurs again in the “Alone” mission, where Graves turned on Soap and Ghost and is now hunting them down.

Under Graves’ command, Shadow Company is going door-to-door, ruthlessly killing innocent civilians in search of Hassan. Soap remarks that Graves is committing war crimes and desires someone to give him the green light to go after them. Ghost then says they’re alone, which prompts a wheel where you can select names of close allies, such as Price, Alejandro, or Laswell. To each name, Ghost has the same advice of being careful who to trust, foreshadowing the ultimate betrayal by General Shepherd.

4 “Speak English.” – Ghost

Ghost stealthily coming out of the water with rifle equipped in Modern Warfare 2.

Here returns the signature humor in the relationship between Soap and Ghost. Sometimes telling silly clever jokes back and forth or Ghost requesting some tea, the best of their moments usually involve Soap MacTavish muttering some phrase in Scottish and Ghost telling him to translate it to English. And this then leads to some playful bickering.

One of those instances is when Soap comments “It’s pishin’ it doon out here” in regard to it raining heavily outside, and Ghost asks him to “speak English.” In another conversation about medals and Ghost calling Soap a winner, Soap responds: “Away n’ bile yer heid,” which Ghost quickly finds out is Scottish for go screw himself.

3 “These Things Take Violence And Timing, I Can Do Both. Kate’s Life Is In A F—-n’ Hourglass.” – Captain Price

Screenshot of Price being upset with Gen. Shepherd at Kate's kidnapping and lack of urgency.

In the previous mission, where Gaz and Captain Price have donned throwback Ghillie Suits and searched for evidence of Hassan’s missiles in Spain, Kate Laswell gets taken by the Al-Qatala terrorists. Price is rightfully upset and even more so now because General Shepherd is reluctant to dispatch a rescue mission.

Shepherd’s response to Price’s offer to lead the rescue team is that it requires “planning and preparation” and that they should hold off. Price refutes that point by saying those missions only need “violence and timing,” which he’s capable of, and uses the analogy of an hourglass to describe the little time Kate has.

2 “The Only Thing That Can Kill Alejandro Is Alejandro.” – Rodolfo And Los Vaqueros

Alejandro Vargas speaks to other MW2 characters that are off-screen.

This quote is repeated throughout the “Prison Break” mission in Modern Warfare 2. Rodolfo first says it to Soap and Ghost as they head toward the prison where Alejandro is captured. Soap worries whether Alejandro will be found alive, but Rodolfo reassures him that he’s known him for 20 years and nothing can kill him except himself.

It’s translated from Spanish “El unico que puede matar a Alejandro es Alejandro,” and all Vaqueros know this saying about Alejandro. In fact, some Vaqueros prisoners you free repeat this exact phrase later on in the mission. It just shows how much faith in him his squad has and how strong of a leader Alejandro truly is.

1 *”Good To See You Again, Simon.” – Captain Price

Captain Price, Alejandro, and Soap gazing at Simon

Generally, when you tell someone it’s “good to see you again,” it means you’re glad to be in their company. With Ghost, this expression carries more special and literal meaning because he never really shows his face and is a masked character throughout the game. That is until Price puts the Ghost Squad into motion and has everyone allied with them put on skull balaclavas like Ghost.

Ghost removes his mask to wear one from the pile on the table to match with everyone else. You only see a glimpse of his back profile, but everyone else sees his face, some for the first time, like Alejandro. Another significant aspect of this moment is Price calling Ghost by his name Simon since the mask is now off.
