Rumors have been circulating for the past few days about the possibility of a Nintendo Direct this weekend. Industry insider Jeff Grubb recently hinted that some kind of Direct could happen next month, but an update from Nintendo Japan hinted that it could happen sooner. Now that we know the Direct is likely, insiders are coming out of the woodwork to share their hints about possible reveals that could happen during the show.

One of those revelations is a Twitter account named Pyoro who claims that a new 2D Mario game is in development and will be revealed at the next Nintendo Direct. The tweet is very cryptic and there is no indication that Pyoro is using reliable sources, so take this with a big pinch of salt. However, the thing that makes Pyoro a slightly more interesting case is that they recently announced the existence of Sonic Superstars as well as the sneaky announcement of Everybody 1-2-Switch earlier in the month.

Both of these predictions give Pyor a bit more weight than the average anonymous Twitter insider, although it’s worth noting that they’ve posted very few tweets since the account is over two years old. With obscure “insiders” like this, it’s always possible that they simply made a bunch of random predictions and deleted the ones that weren’t accurate. However, the specificity of the Everybody 1-2-Switch and Sonic Superstars leaks makes Pyoro one of the ones to at least keep an eye on.

It’s not exactly unreasonable to imagine that Nintendo could announce a new 2D Mario, especially when you consider that it still hasn’t capitalized on the success of Super Mario Bros. with a new game. Nintendo’s list of titles coming out in the second half of 2023 is pretty empty, and it’s very possible that we could see a new Mario game announced with a release date slated for this holiday season.

As for the “remake of the SNES classic” to be announced, that claim is much more vague and could mean literally anything. Those who saw the tweet hinted that it could be anything from Chrono Trigger to Super Mario RPG, but there’s currently no indication of those results. As usual, it’s best to wait until we get official word that a Nintendo Direct is actually happening first, and then maybe we can start getting a little excited.
