When you level up your barbarian in Diablo 4, you’ll unlock the ability to equip one of four unique key passives that will affect how you play the game. These key passives are abilities that activate when you reach certain criteria and offer a massive boost to the overall power of a particular build.

While these passives can be a huge improvement to your builds, not every key passive will work seamlessly with certain character builds, and you can only equip one of these key passives at a time. If you don’t want to waste gold on equipping a new Key Passive, check out the list below to see which of these abilities will boost your gameplay the most.

4 Effervescent wounds

  • When you bleed an enemy, you have a chance equal to your critical strike chance to increase the amount of bleeding by 100% of your critical strike damage bonus. Defeating a bleeding enemy causes an explosion that deals 3 bleeding damage over 5 seconds.

Whenever you use your skills or deal damage to certain enemies, you have the chance to inflict a bleed status effect that will slowly deal consistent damage over time. While the bleeding effect is mainly used to regenerate rage and deal consistent damage, Gushing Wounds Key Passive turns this status effect into your main damage output.

With this key passive active, the amount of bleed and bleed damage you deal can now be affected by your critical hit stat. Specifically, the amount of bleed you use is determined by your critical strike chance, while bleed damage coincides with the maximum amount of critical strike damage in your build.

Since this effect is calculated based on your crit chance, you should always make sure you have the desired amount of crit in your build, or risk rendering this passive completely useless. Overall, while this passive can offer some massive damage boosts, only upgrade this key passive if you’re willing to play your build until you’re at full crit ratio.

3 No limits

An image from Diablo 4 of a Barbarian wielding the Unconstrained passive key, which makes your attack stat stronger and last longer.

  • Increase Berserk’s maximum duration by 5 seconds and increase his damage bonus by 25%.

Barbarians can activate the Berserk skill at any time during battle and immediately gain a five second movement speed boost and a 25% increase in total damage. However, using this skill along with the Unconstrained Key Passive will give you a flat 50% damage increase instead of the original 25% increase.

Note that unlike the other buffs on this list, this specific damage boost applies to every type of damage you can deal, so it’s not limited to just skills or basic attacks. Since this buff only lasts for five seconds, you need to carefully and tactfully plan which skills and attacks to use immediately after activating this damage boost so that you can effortlessly get the most damage out of this passive.

Unfortunately, while this Key Passive is incredibly easy to activate, the Barbarian class has some crowd control skills that require some serious play time, meaning some aspects of your deck need to be abandoned if you want to really take advantage of this effect.

2 Unbridled rage

An image from Diablo 4 where the Barbarian uses his Unbridled Rage passive ability with his ground slam skill to stun enemies in the area in front of him.

  • Basic skills deal 135% more damage but cost 100% more rage.

Unlike the other key passives on this list, Unbridled Rage has no caveats that must be completed before you can take advantage of this passive, and instead replaces this system with a significant nerf to your rage management. Specifically, if you equip Unbridled Rage, all of your basic skills will deal 135% more damage, but will require double the amount of Rage to take effect.

Like all other classes in Diablo 4, the Barbarian has a resource that is completely unique to them called Fury.

Rage is expended every time you use any of your skills and can be regained by taking damage or draining blood. While the nerf from this can be significant, building properly around the added rage cost will allow you to really put out some of the maximum damage from the Barbarian class.

Lastly, just because you have this passive gear doesn’t mean you have to build around it entirely, especially if you’re skilled enough to play around with the added rage cost.

1 A walking arsenal

An image from Diablo 4 of a barbarian swinging a mace and using the Walking Arsenal passive key to deal more damage with his attacks.

  • Dealing direct damage with two-handed melee, two-handed slashing, or dual-wielding weapons deals 10% increased damage for 6 seconds. While all three damage bonuses are active, you gain an additional 15% increased damage.

Once you get into the late game of Diablo 4, you’ll almost exclusively be using two-handed weapons to get through tough bosses and dungeons. Equipping the Walking Arsenal Key Passive will deal 10% more damage to all enemies whenever you hit them with a melee attack, slash, or just a simple dual-wielding weapon.

Fortunately, all of these bonuses can be stacked independently of each other, meaning you can have multiple activations at the same time. Additionally, with all three bonuses active at once, you’ll increase your damage by a further 15%, meaning you can deal up to 45% more damage simply by attacking with this passive.

If you’ve decided to equip the Walking Arsenal, be sure to plan out your attack combos before entering combat so you can always juggle your passive’s bonuses and maintain maximum offensive damage output.
