Fans of the survival game are in for a bit of a surprise, it seems Cut 2 it just leaked. Or so it seems – it's also possible that the leak is some kind of PR stunt or maybe unrelated to the original game. However, with RustGiven the popularity and the long period since launch, it is not unrealistic to expect something new from the developer Facepunch Studios.
First released in early access in December 2013, Rust sees players scavenging a large open world in search of resources. The game is best known for its interactions between players, which often end in witty bits of fun or, more often, violence. With a number of features added since launch, Facepunch Studios probably has no shortage of ideas for ways to evolve the formula in a potential sequel.
Rust's mobile version is hopefully just the tip of the iceberg
Rust is set to get a mobile spin-off, and with this news, the future of the beloved indie hit might look a lot brighter.
Rust 2 may be on the way
That sequel may be soon as pictures Cut 2Steam pages are now circulating on Reddit. Unfortunately, the site is devoid of practical information, boasting only the name “Cut 2” and a free-to-play tag. The Steam page is still available via a direct link at the time of writing, although it is unlisted and will not appear in search. SteamDB has flagged Cut 2 listed as suspect because it “may be malicious or masquerading as another product”.
The store's page has gotten quite a bit of attention on Reddit. But most importantly, Facepunch Games COO Alistair McFarlane, known as Alistair_Mc on Reddit, commented: “You ain't seen nothing.” Notably, the Reddit account that created the original post only existed for a few minutes before the image spread online. Some fans took this, along with McFarlane's comment, as an indication that this may be a marketing ploy.
In another report, McFarlane stated that: “[visits] subreddit a lot,” and sometimes sees posts that cause confusion. He added, “Now you're all asking yourselves, is this real? Maybe?” While it certainly doesn't clear things up, it's certainly a way to get fans excited for a potential full reveal sometime in the near future. Summer Game Fest is in June, so it makes sense that developers might want to start drumming up excitement should the full reveal happen on gaming's biggest stage.

It's not the first time and a potential sequel made headlines. In 2023, when Unity changed its pricing structure, Facepunch founder Garry Newman announced Cut 2 it wouldn't be a Unity game due to the cost increase. Unity has since changed course and the game has been barely heard from since. Because of this, it was unclear if a sequel was actually in the works.
Fans may get an answer soon. If there's a new game on the way, it's sure to make waves. Rust remains one of the most played games on Steam, typically hovering around 150,000 concurrent players. It is easy to place Rust in the top ten most played games on Steam and sometimes even in the top five. Of course, transitions are difficult, and if the game ends up being free-to-play, as the tags say on the store page, there are bound to be some questions about potential microtransactions. for now Rust Fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for more information.
