As Mercy Main in Overwatch, I would like to personally apologize for Season 1

The Overwatch Spotlight blew most fans' expectations — including my own — out of the water. Many expected to see three more heroes revealed for 2026, and some were even optimistic about a triple hero drop for next season after all the trailers. However, Blizzard shocked everyone not only by announcing that there would be five new ones Overwatch heroes added after the season 1 relaunch on February 10, but a total of 10 new heroes will be introduced over the course of 2026. Add to that the return of animated shorts, bolder events, annual stories that unfold and connect across seasons, the return of post-match hero cards and more, and there's so much for fans to enjoy. As always, however, there are a few lingering complaints.

Unfortunately, my main support hero, Mercy, is at the heart of the latest controversy, and I feel that even the biggest fan of the angelic healer would agree that the criticism is fair. In addition to complaints about Anrana's in-game face not matching her appearance in the Wuyang trailers, and the new menu UI being too mobile for some players, a significant portion of the community is upset that Mercy is getting a second Mythic skin. A large portion of the hero roster doesn't have a single mythic yet, including heroes like Ramattra and ESPECIALLY Lucio who have been desperate for a mythic for a long time. But just as angry as these Overwatch players of course are, I can't help but be excited about Mercy's upcoming skin, so I'd like to apologize for that.

On the bright side, Ramattra finally gets her dancing emotes and Lucio gets a Kerropi skin in the upcoming one Hi Kitty cooperate. Still, they probably just feel like consolation prizes for fans of these heroes as Mercy drowns in skin (like her own Hi Kitty common clothing based on Pompompurin).

Why Lucio Mains is particularly bummed about the Mythical Season 1 news

It's one thing to not see a Mythic skin for your hero of choice when you were hoping it would finally be your turn, but the problem with Lucio is that it feels like Blizzard is trolling their fans on purpose. Examples include:

  • Before revealing Lifeweaver's Mythic Overwatch 2 In season 19, social media accounts mentioned Lucio several times, which ultimately came to nothing.

  • Lucio was clearly the inspiration for the latest Overwatch competitive rides, leading many to hope that he would finally be next in line for the Mythic.

  • Blizzard's official short video showing off Mercy's new skin shows Lucia watching in disgust and saying, “Can you believe this? I don't even know what to tell you…” before walking away in disgust.

Obviously, Blizzard is in line with Overwatch Community desire for Lucio Mythic, but for whatever reason he has yet to pull the trigger. And unfortunately for Lucio mains, it doesn't look like that will be the case for a few months. During the Spotlight stream, not only was Mei confirmed as the midseason Mythic for Season 1, but three more Mythic skins were announced. They will go to Soldier: 76, Illari, and Mauga, meaning that Lucio's next chance at a Mythic of his own will be in the middle of Season 3. He is also unlucky when it comes to OverwatchMythical Weapons as the next four will be Juno, Genji, Hanzo and Sojourn.

What makes everything weirder is that Lucio is an Overwatch OG, with 12/21 of the classic starting list characters having Mythics (and Soldier: 76/Mei is set to be 14/21 very soon). Of the last 1/3 of the original cast members who still need a mythos – Lucio, Pharah, Roadhog, Bastion, Torbjorn, Symmetra and Winston – the music loving support is probably the most popular, with only Winston and Pharah coming close. There's a passionate Lucio mains community full of experienced players like Frogger who regularly share their best boops and side routes, and he says the fanbase is really desperate for Mythic. And it's one thing for newer characters like Lifeweaver or Illari to get Mythics ahead of older heroes, but it's a whole other thing to have one of Blizzard's favorites be corrupted by another Mythic.

As Mercy Main, I am both guilty and excited for Season 1

I won't blame any main Lucio who feels the need to sneak past my team and shoot me in Overwatch Season 1 because it must be sad to see Mercy so much extra love. Yes, she's undoubtedly a big skin seller and thus continues to be spoiled, but some characters like Baptiste and Winston regularly feel left out in the process. Now, Mercy's reign of terror has extended to Mythic skins, and those who don't play her are understandably rolling their eyes. It absolutely disgusts me… and yet I'd be lying if I said I wasn't planning on blasting my way through battle pass at an extreme pace just to get Mercy's latest Mythic.

Mercy's new mythos, called Celestial Guardian, is absolutely amazing. It sees Angela Ziegler donning a shiny outfit with massive fluffy wings that are drastically different from her typical futuristic wings, and her chosen intro hero even sees her emerge from them. These wings can be swapped out for similarly bold, lightweight looks at level 2. In addition to a glowing halo, she has a smaller pair of wings behind her head, with two new colors available at level 3, giving her a pale blue or red aesthetic. The weapon VFX and resurrection animations are suitably sparkling, and players can experience falling glowing feathers along with other small touches at max level.

I personally liked the original Mercy's Mythic which made her an angel of death and showed what she would look like as a villain, but I'm aware it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. This skin is a boon for any Mercy player who loves nice skins, and given the majority of her wardrobe, I'd imagine there are plenty of players who do. If I had to rate the skin, I'd give it a 9/10 because I'm not a big fan of the hair pieces and I'd love some alternative hairstyles, but overall it's beautiful. I can't wait to add this to my embarrassingly large collection of Mercy skins, and this unwavering hype is where my guilt comes in. Do I think the other heroes deserve Mythic Season 1 more? Absolutely. Would I give up on this skin now that it exists? No.

Blizzard's outright trolling with the new Mercy skin video is funny, sure, but only if it results in a Mythic skin for Lucia soon. Two mythos per gero cannot become the norm, at least not until the rest of the original list has at least one mythos. Now there's a real fear that Kiriko, another skin eater, will soon also get a second Mythic, and it's hard to imagine it being any less controversial than this. Hopefully the Celestial Guardian Mercy was just a one-off after Team 4 had a particularly great skin idea, because I don't know if Lucio mains can stand to wait any longer for their overdue turn in the spotlight. As a main Mercy who is used to being spoiled, I know for sure that I would not be able to cope with such treatment.
