It's been a while since we last experienced multiplayer in Assassin's Creed. In fact, the series hasn't had a multiplayer suite since Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Black Flag came out back in 2013, so it's been a minute.
However, in 2022, Ubisoft announced its intention to revive the cult classic multiplayer Assassin's Creed through a standalone title developed by members of For Honor, codenamed Project Invictus.
We haven't had many updates since then, and based on a report from insider xj0nathan, there may be a good reason for that. Taking to social media, an insider shared some not-so-kind words allegedly given to him by a current developer that portray the game as “horrendous” and seemingly not a joy to work on.
The machine translation from Reddit is as follows:
ASSASSIN'S CREED INVCTUS LEAK: Developers hate the game!
I told you about it a while ago: Invictus will be a kind of “Fall Guys” Assassin's Creed version, a somewhat “fun” game with Fortnite-like graphics and a series of challenges leading to the coveted Victory Royale.
I told you the concept was terrible and that the game would probably flop. Well, someone from the development team contacted me saying that they don't believe it at all either and they are all disgusted with working on this garbage 😂
Here's what they said: “I don't know a single colleague who likes Invictus. Only the managers will probably continue to smile and praise this project. It's terrible: ridiculous animations, hideous and cartoonish characters (their faces are just as terrible), idiotic sound and visual effects, battle arenas… Maybe it's just a terrible game for only six years. I wonder who this game was made for. I don't no idea if that's the case, I feel sorry for the parents of these kids who will be harassed for money to fuel a new wave of microtransactions.”
Insider included a Fall Guys-esque image of Ezio, and was later asked by another prominent insider, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, if the game actually looked like that.
“Oh no, not at all, that game is more like Fortnite, but a little less 'cartoony,'” replied xj0nathan. “Let's say it's somewhere between realistic and cel-shaded.
If Ubisoft can't remake the PS2 game, how can we trust them to do anything?
The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake has officially been canceled.
However, Henderson wasn't sold, writing back: “Unless things have changed drastically, it looks more like a typical AC game to me (perhaps with a little less graphical fidelity than its MP) with arenas based on areas from different games.”
So far, it's a bit unclear what Invictus is all about
Assassin's Creed multiplayer was never the best in terms of functionality, but it wasn't terrible either. Previously, xj0nathan reported that Invictus would be like Fall Guys in that it would have multiple rounds of different games.
It's also apparently very arcadey. Ultimately, we'll have to wait for an official reveal, but things aren't looking too promising right now.
Highguard failing shouldn't matter that much
Highguard has become the main theme of the game's art, instead of just a generic shooter that isn't as good as Apex Legends.
