Avowed is coming to PS5 on February 17th with the Anniversary Update

PlayStation 5 players will get their first chance soon Openan action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment from 2025 set in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity series. Open was one of the first big Day One games to hit Xbox Game Pass last year, and it's coming to PlayStation 5 on February 17th alongside a big anniversary update.

Originally released for Xbox Series X|S and PC on February 18, 2025, Open made a strong impression on players, introducing them to a first-person game that involves combat and magic, with a plot focused on fighting a mysterious plague that infects his fantasy realm. It received a warm reception from fans and professional critics alike, registering a top critic average and player rating of 80 on OpenCritic, and in response to strong sales, Obsidian said it might continue with expansions and sequels. Now it reveals a new notification Open will be released in the near future on PlayStation 5. As revealed during the New Game+ Showcase on January 8th, the action RPG will be coming to PS5 on February 17th, making it another in a growing line of first-party Xbox exclusives that have expanded their reach to other platforms over the past few months. Although it is technically considered a component Pillars of Eternity series that was created by Obsidian and launched its other respective games in 2015 and 2018, Open takes on a much more action-oriented format, eschewing isometric team-based cRPG combat in favor of more intense action with smaller groups. Since Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft in late 2018, Open was developed under the Xbox banner, so its release on PS5 just a day before its one-year anniversary is a little more surprising.

But the jump to the PS5 won't be the only thing fans of the game can look forward to. As announced in an interview during the showcase, players on all platforms will be able to enjoy the free update, which includes a lot of new features. These features will include the New Game Plus mode Openwhich was first announced in May 2025 and was supposed to arrive in the fall, but never happened. Players will have the option to start over as a new character at level 1, but will retain all previously acquired equipment and abilities. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to fight stronger, customizable enemies with special resistances that could provide extra longevity. Open as he enters his second year.

Another big feature coming to the game is the ability to play as a wider variety of character races Open. When it was first released, Open it only allowed players to choose human or elf as their default race, although the player character is always considered divine as well, and there are companions that can be recruited that have much more variety. Game director Gabriel Paramo revealed during the showcase that the anniversary update will add the ability to play as Orlan, a furry and sometimes animal-like halfling creature; semiaquatic Aumaua, or a more classic high fantasy dwarf. Additionally, quarterstaffs will be added to players' weapon selection options as part of the development team's response to high demand for more weapon types.

Pre-orders at Open on PlayStation 5 they are available now with the base game for $49.99 and the Premium Edition for $59.99. That extra $10 gets players a few in-game items, including two sets of armor and eight companion skins, as well as a digital artbook and soundtrack. And while the anniversary update adds plenty of content, gamers may want to keep their eyes peeled for a potential sequel, as reports suggest that Obsidian is currently working on four new games, though it's unclear if Open or Pillars of Eternity are in the mix.
