There is nothing more satisfying than recreating a loved one Dungeons and Dragons character in Baldur's Gate 3 — although you will have to spend hours carefully playing with the Character Creator. The back side is just as fabulous and relaxing new Heroes of Faerun and Adventures in Faerun books for Dungeons and Dragonsit was just easier. The books in particular contain a plethora of Bhaal and Bhaalspawn related content Baldur's Gate 3 fans who want to recreate their Dark Urge in tabletop form.
Scion of the Three is perfect for Bhaalspawn
A dark urge inward Baldur's Gate 3 is a popular character variant because it takes the story in unique directions, following up on events Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and represents a middle ground between a completely custom “Tav” and a more structured Origin Character. Dark Urges are amnesiacs of Bhaal, the God of Murder, who can reject or accept their bloody fate. Heroes of Faerun and Adventures in Faerun acknowledge the popularity of Dark Urge with subclasses, feats, lore, and premade adventures perfect for playing as Bhaalspawn.
Players looking to create a Dark Urge should check out Scion of the Three, a new Rogue subclass introduced in Heroes of Faerun. Scion of the Three allows characters to swear allegiance to Bane, Bhaal, or Myrkul. Stions of the Three can scare enemies, deal damage with their aura alone, and increase the effectiveness of their Sneak Attack. In particular, choosing Bhaal as a patron provides the following:
-
Resistance to poison damage
-
Ward cantrip blade
Multiclassing into Scion of the Three at just three levels grants Bloodthirst, which is used to teleport and attack Bloodied enemies, an ability that appears to be directly inspired by Orin the Red's Bhaalspawn. Players who want to play Dark Urge but aren't interested in being Rogues could also replace other abilities of their chosen class with Bloodthirst to add some Bhaalspawn flavor to their build.
Dungeons and Dragons' Bhaalspawn Feats And Lore
In addition to the Scion of the Three subclass, Heroes of Faerun it contains lots of other Bhaal flavored goodies. The following boons are great additions to any Dark Urge character:
- Blessing of Bloodshed – Gain advantage on attack rolls after killing enemies, deal extra damage while Bloodied
- Boon of Terror – Become immune to the Frightened condition, increase the horror of Frightened enemies, gain skill in intimidation
- Soul Drinker's Blessing — Gain resistance to cold and necrotic damage, regain health when enemies are killed
While none of the background introduced in the new Dungeons and Dragons books are directly tied to the dark urge, the dragon cult background could easily be reworked to serve Bhaal's cult instead. His feat, Cult of the Dragon Initiate, allows players to terrify nearby creatures and gain inspiration from their fear, which would lend itself well to Dark Urge skills.
Both books also have a lot of information about the Dead Three and how to serve them. The “Gods of Faerun” section contains detailed information about Bhaal and his followers Adventures in Faerun“Baldur's Gate Gazetteer” describes key Bhaal cult sites throughout the city, such as Candulhallow's tombstones and the temple in the sewers, where players can encounter Orin. Baldur's Gate 3.
An adventure fit for a dark urge
In addition to subclasses, feats, backgrounds, and more, the new Forgotten Realms books include several premade ones Dungeons and Dragons adventure. One in particular, “Blood Night”, seems tailor-made for Dark Urge players. It involves players finding themselves in the middle of a “murder competition” organized by several wealthy Bhaal-worshipping patriarchs. Players could easily insert their Dark Urge character into the story, either as a participant or someone trying to stop the bloodshed. Maybe the Dark Compulsion stepped in after the events Baldur's Gate 3 — stopping Bhaal's followers from sacrificing more souls to the Lord of Murder.
