Rathalos and variants

You have a Ratha in your party from the very beginning of the game, and you won't encounter any more Rathalos until Serathis. And conveniently, these Rathalos have identical stat trends to the Ratha, so no replacement is needed. However, rathalos in the wild can mutate.

Ratha is already a powerful Monstie with balanced stats, but if you want to push it further, you'll want Dreadking Rathalos. Defense is traded for higher attack and HP and a bunch of powerful skills making them a real force to be reckoned with.

Thunderlord Zinogre

Getting Thunderlord Zinogre takes some work, you also have to rescue Mizutsune and then put them both in the same habitat before you rank Zinogre's Ecosystem to S. It's a long process, but Thunderlord Zinogre is no match.

Like many monster variants, Thunderlord drops its defense pretty low, though the tradeoff is the highest attack stat in the game, alongside very high HP and speed that's nothing to scoff at. Add to that the many powerful skills they gain and there are few Monsties as powerful as them.

7

Diablos and variants

In the main games, Diablos have always been one of the most terrifying monsters in battle due to the combination of their sheer speed and strength. And Stories 3 represents exactly that, with both stats identical to regular Diablo and very high.

However, there are two other mutations, Black and Bloodbath, each dropping more defense in favor of higher attack and even some extra health for Bloodbath. They serve different purposes, but all are deceptively fast and obscenely powerful.

6

Brachydios

You can naturally encounter Brachydios in Azuria, though their eggs don't naturally spawn there, so you'll have to wait until you get to Serathis to finally hatch them yourself. If you look at their stats, you'll understand why.

If you use Paintball, you can force the Brachydiose in Azuria to retreat after being defeated, allowing you to get one of their eggs much sooner than intended.

While defense and speed are average, Brachydios has incredibly high HP and attack. They also have strong disease resistance, and many of their skills allow them to Blastblight enemies for extra damage.

5

Garangolm

Garangolm seen on Monsterpedia in Monster Hunter Stories 3.

Garangolm can naturally be found in Canalta Timberlands and have a unique trait among the many monsters in the game – they have both obscenely high Defense and HP.

There are almost no other monsters in the game that can match Garangolm's defense, let alone the high combination of HP and defense. Their speed and attack are very average, although their sheer survivability makes them very useful for tanking attacks from strong enemies.

4

Gravios And black Gravios

The only monsters that can hold a candle to Garangolm's incredible defense are Gravios variants. While their speed and attack drop even lower than Garangolm, their defense and HP manage to get even higher.

Gravios and Black Gravios are basically two sides of the same spectrum in this regard. Gravios has max defense while Black Gravios has max HP and slightly increased attack.

3

Espinas

In the main games, Espinas is terrifying because he can inflict every status effect under the sun on you with a single attack. They are terrifying in Stories 3 because they defend against every single element until they rage.

Espinas also have great stats, but their elemental resistances add such a high level of base power that adds to their survivability much more. Their defense won't make up for it, although decently high HP still helps.

2

Deviljho

The great pickle that is Deviljho and the subject of many urban myths, they are still obscenely powerful and have the ability to push themselves further beyond their limits to be simply absurdly powerful.

Like Brachydios, you can get Deviljho earlier by forcing them to retreat with paintball in the Mt. Canalta in Canalta Timberland.

While their defense is very low and their speed leaves a lot to be desired, they have fairly high HP and their attack is one of the highest in the game, easily boosted by their many skills.

Grimclaw Tigrex

Grimclaw Tigrex is the most extreme definition of glass cannon in the entire game. You must first rescue the Tigrex and add them back into the ecosystem, then go through a complicated process to finally get the Grimclaw.

They have the highest Attack stat and the lowest Defense of roughly the monsters in the game. They have good HP and high speed, so you rely on getting your hits in before the monsters take down the Grimclaw. But when they hit, they hit hard.
