Updated on December 30, 2025, by Mark Sammut: Tears of the Kingdom might be more than 2 years old by this point, but its popularity has not really waned. If you are traveling through Hyrule, you will run into Gloom at one point or another, particularly while inside the Depths. As we have already covered the best Gloom recovery recipes, we have added a section covering Gloom in general.
How Gloom Damage & Recovery Actually Works
Introduced in Tears of the Kingdom, Gloom is directly tied to the story, as it spreads across Hyrule when Ganondorf is resurrected. Narratively, Gloom is the reason that Link returns to his original weakened state, as it shrinks down his HP to just three Heart Containers. This plot point also gives away Gloom’s mechanical impact on Link and the player, as stepping into it will cause you to lose Heart Containers at a quick pace. The impacted Hearts are greyed out, and they cannot be recovered using standard healing meals. Instead, you will need items specifically designed to heal Gloom.
Gloom is mostly found in TOTK‘s Depths, to the point that the game incorporates Lightroots as a way to heal any impacted hearts.
You can also recover Hearts lost in the Depths by fast-traveling to the surface.
Although not as common, Gloom can be found on the surface as red-ish puddles that feature extruding arms, and they can signal the arrival of Phantom Ganon, depending on whether Link defeats the original Gloom Spawn. Unlike the Depths, Link cannot just fast-travel to a location to quickly recover his lost Hearts while on the surface, so he will need to eat meals that have the additional effect of healing Gloom.
