Cyberpunk 2 won't be released until 2028

We've known that CD Projekt Red has been working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 for a while now, and now we know a little more about when we can expect it to be here. Settle in, chooms, it's going to take a while.

CDPR released its Q3 2025 financial report this week, revealing that despite Cyberpunk's early, very serious problems, it's on track to be an even bigger hit for the studio than The Witcher 3. The report also included notes on Cyberpunk 2's development progress, confirming that it won't be released until 2028.

CDPR is supposed to finish the Witcher game before Cyberpunk 2

Anytime from 2028 to the end of time is quite a release window, but it's narrower than what we knew about the Night City sequel this time 24 hours ago. For those expecting more Cyberpunk, this probably won't come as much of a surprise. CDPR is likely to finish The Witcher 4 first, and the last we heard suggested it wouldn't be here until 2027.

Johnny grabbed V's arm in Cyberpunk 2077.

That would mean a new Witcher game and a new Cyberpunk in back-to-back years, and that's not happening. However, Cyberpunk 2 development seems to be going well. SynthPotato summarized CDPR's financial report comments on the sequel, which include how many people are currently working on the game and how and when the studio plans to push that number forward.

What we know about the Cyberpunk 2 development timeline

Cyberpunk 2 currently has 135 people working on it, which is a jump from the 116 who worked on it in July. Starting next year, recruitment for the project will increase significantly, with the goal of up to 400 people working on the game at CDPR's Polish and Boston studios by the end of 2027.

That's as far as the official Cyberpunk 2 timeline goes into the future so far, hence the confirmation that Cyberpunk 2 won't be around until at least 2028. That doesn't mean it's on track for a 2028 release. Quite the contrary, in reality, all this really means is that there will be hundreds of people working on the sequel and beyond 2.

The Witcher 4 - Ciri as a strange character

This new timeline tells me more than anything else that the 2027 estimate for The Witcher 4 is still accurate. If CDPR didn't have a new Witcher game to work on, most, if not all, of its efforts would already be focused on Cyberpunk 2. This increase in team size into 2026 and into 2027 will likely mean that the Witcher developers will finish and join the Cyberpunk team.

CDPR has confirmed that Cyberpunk will be getting a sequel in October 2022. That means it has plenty of time to play before it starts hitting the wait times we experienced between the first game's announcement and release. The original Cyberpunk was announced in May 2012 and released in November 2020. That gives CDPR until April 2031 to avoid breaking that record.
